Got burned on an eBay counterfeit rotary polisher

Thought I got a good deal on a Neiko rotary air polisher. Not so much... The sellers picture clearly shows a Neiko brand polisher. It came in a box with the brand infinity marked on the outside. Hooked it up to air and it was leaking from the pipe threads for the quick connector. Turns out the pipe threads were not deep enough so I removed the bushing from the polisher. It had straight threads and no gasket or o-ring, just some hardened sealer. I fixed the threads and added an O-ring that I had. I pull the trigger. Dirty oil everywhere! Fortunately I wasn't anywhere near the booth. After I clean myself and the area up I took it outside to run most of the oil out of it. Then I ran 2 or 3 ounces of 710 through it and ran it dry. After that another rinse with the 710. I'm so upset I haven't touched it in weeks.

I think I may just take it completely apart and clean it as if it was a spray gun. I imagine I need to at least give it a couple of drops of oil. Just the thought of adding oil makes me nervous.

Sellers Picture. No mention of brand in the discription

Why didn't you contact the seller and complain? If they told you to pound salt, you escalate and get eBay involved. eBay almost always finds for the buyer

I have had this happen several times. Sometimes the seller makes good, other times they don't. When they refuse I escalate, and always win. I've had them want me to pay return shipping for a product that was not as described. When they did that, I refused, escalated, and eBay has always found in my favor.

All you need is to copy and save the original listing; if it shows the Neiko product then you win.

i have one of those loud bastards i've had for 40 years. worst tool i ever bought . it's a CP . i haven't used it since the 90's. it will spit oil all over the part . i had a sweat band on it.
I've got that same model CP. Probably from the 60's. It was given to me by a dear friend so I'll never get rid of it, but I don't use it. Air hog, spews oil, and loud.

Yep, eBay will make it right, even it the seller doesn't.
Contact the seller, make your request to return the product for not being what they advertised and if they refuse to refund your money, contact eBay and get them involved.
My wife had to do that recently for the same reason, they listed one thing and then sent another. I personally hate seeing the Made In China label.

Thanks everyone! I was so he PO'd after drafting this post and the moment I received the first reply from 64Avante I knew what I had to do. I went ahead and made a complaint to the seller. No answer from him. Then I proceeded to request a return from eBay. I immediately was able to print a label. Shipping is free. All is good.

Anyone have recommendations for an affordable rotary 7" pneumatic polisher that tops out at 3,000 RPM or thereabouts.

I don't know what is "affordable" these days.:) You have junk stuff that is, and decent stuff that is borderline, and premiun stuff that you have to sell a kidney to afford. I have an IR 314A that is a good machine.. Years ago I used one a lot. I lost it, along with a lot other tools in a fire at the Shop I worked at. Bought one about 5 years ago to replace it and have never used it. I always end up using my electric polisher. Especially since I ditched my Milwaukee polisher that weighed as much as a small child for a smaller machine.

New they are around $220 and higher. You can find them used on Ebay sometimes.

Other decent names to look for, Aircat, CP (Chicago Pneumatic) a few others whose names escape me ATM.

They are all noisy, not quite as bad as the high speed models though. And they use a lot of air.

I use this one. It's electric but variable speed and you can set the max rps on a dial.
Great buffer, I like that it's fairly light weight and the variable speed trigger lets you start out slow, so you don't sling compound all over the shop.

Of course I bought it back when America was prosperous for $180.

Someone gave me an air buffer similar to what is pictured about 25 years ago. Never used it , don't even know what happened to it. I hated to run the compressor when I did not have to. Cheaper to purchase an electric buffer than a new compressor.

Thanks everyone. Since the consensus is to go electric regarding a rotary buffer I have decided to go that route.

Regarding a DA polisher I see they sell ones with an 8 mm throw all the way up to 20 mm. I assume the longer throw is more aggressive. What are you guys using?

I have 7 inch and like it. Lots of pads readily available as well.

Also have 2 inch pad for my cordless drill that works good for small areas.

I think dual-action polishers are aimed at the detail world and not the body shop. Although I haven't kept up with the latest trends. If you want to remove color sanding scratches, rotary and not dual-action is the way. Dual action can be great for final polishing and waxing.

I assume DA and Random Orbital are the same thing. When I said DA I was referring to one such as in the link below.
Do you only use a rotary through completion of a cut & buff?

Porter Cable 7424XP 6" Variable Speed Random Orbital Polisher

Yes, dual action and random orbital mean the same thing. As far as I know, only detailers and beginners use them. I wouldn't mind being corrected by one of the other pros here though.
