Gloss Black with Matte Black or Flat Black Stripes

I got a 65 mustang fastback Im going to use Black SPI epoxy primer for a color base coat and SPI Universal gloss clear coat over that (besides the stripes), my question is do I use SPI "Matte Clear" to make the matte black stripes or use "SPI Matte Black" paint? If i can use Matte Clear, do I do it at same layer as gloss black, or can I shoot entire car with SPI gloss Universal Clear then put SPI Matte clear on top of gloss clear for the matte stripes?to get results of attached photos? Id prefer to use matte clear if I can get same results as attached photo, maybe attached photo is matte clear strips? I love that flat charcoal look in those stripes in photos. another important question is will the black epoxy as a base coat have any UV issues? or will the UV protectants in the Universal clear over top prevent the epoxy basecoat from UV breakdown?

The reason I'm trying to reduce the amount of spraying and layers by trying to eliminate base coat layer is because I paint in a garage and the less layers I have to paint the better when your a garage painter you need all the help you can get, as we are not always set up like a body shop, some of us are hobbyist and want to learn how to make this easier as painting is a royal pain in the ass but you do get your biggest rewards of the entire restoration as a sweet paint job for sure. If I can get same results with a black epoxy primer for a base coat then its simplified,

so I will try to answer my own question after doing further research....I suspect the stripes are matte clear in the attached photos and not flat black, and I would spray entire car with SPI black epoxy primer as a seal coat by reducing it around 10% and it will also serve as a base coat, I will then tape off my strips and spray the matte clear for the stripes, then mask off the flat matte clear and then spray the rest of the car with gloss clear.

The black epoxy as basecoat may not give you a clean enough look under the sun, it may look a bit grayish or brown. Buy an extra quart of SPI black basecoat and spray two coats over the epoxy. Is not that big of a deal that you’re in a garage, the base will lay smoother and be easier to spray than epoxy. Take advantage of the fact that the SPI black is one of the nicest black in any paint line and don’t settle for the epoxy as your final finish, IMHO.

The black epoxy outside next to a black - black will look gray shade, it will work but just depends where you use it as Jorge has the right facts.
 
ok got it, I will do a test panel of SPI clear over SPI black epoxy and see hot it looks in sunlight. I f I dont like it then I will go with a black base coat...BUT still leaves one unanswered question on the stripes in attached photo, do you think that stripe is Matte Clear over black base or is it Matte blacK? here is a link of you tube video of the 65 mustang if you have any time to view to get many angles.

There’s some weird color effect going on there because they look medium silver on the face but turn black on the side tone. Maybe PM JimC , he’s very experienced with pearl and customs finishes. And for that effect you’d need flat clear coat over whatever special basecoat they used on that car.
 
just shoot the car solid black then clear it. after that just mask for the stripes and shoot matte black ss. while i love the look of gloss and matte blk together, i could never do it for myself because no matter what you are left with a paint edge and i hate paint edges. i like all my graphics smooth so you cant feel them. in the end its no different that putting a vinyl stripe on. dont clear over the epoxy. it will look like poo. you want a nice jet black base.

I dont agree with you that a painted stripe with an edge is not any better than a vinyl decal stripe, paint holds up much longer than vinyl and paint can be cut and buffed and waxed, vinyl cant and it breaks down faster with UV as well.
 
yes, sorry not exactly how i meant it. i was just referring to how you will have an edge like a sticker either way you go.
