Get away with just 2k

I'm going to be painting the front end of my car this spring. There is some rock chips in the hood edge and plastic bumper.

Back in the day I worked in a same day "bodyshop". We would do whatever repair we needed and just use a 2k primer sand and spray our base and clear.

Never had a issue.

Will I run into issues doing the same with spi regular build 2k? Not going to lie im trying to avoid epoxy, and since this is a low end vehicle ita more of a production kind of repair.
 
It will work, just not as good as an epoxy.
If car is of value and your keeping, epoxy it, if a used car special or just a collision job your going to dump in 2-3 years, 2k primers will work.
 
Sure you can get away with a used car repair. But that's what it is and a low end repair. Are you using SPI primers?
 
I was planning on using the spi 2k primer. Wasnt sure if I should use the regular primer or turbo 2k.

The cars im working on are my daily drivers. nothing fancy like what most of you guys are working on.
 
Either primer will work and all could be called direct to metal but I refuse to say that, I will leave that to the companies that buy private label primer and don't have a clue what they are talking about.
Yes in production shops where doing a small repair, the primers are used everyday for speed.
Bottom line is a restoration shop would never put a 2K over bare metal but done everyday in production shops, daily driver you could go either way.

Im not going over bare metal...if there is some it will be very little. Its mostly a scuff and respray of junkyard oem parts to my color. The bumper is plastic and wont be going down to bare plastic. Just wanting to fill in some of the rock chips.

To be frank epoxy kinda scares me haha. With the epoxy im assuming I have to do the entire panel. No just "spot prime"
