FORD 5.8 MOTOR QUESTION.

I am going to redo my `1996 f 150 this winter, It came with a 300 6 cylinder motor but I have a friend who has a 5.8 that I can get very reasonable. My question is will the 5.8 buckle straight up to my transmission and what all would I need to change to make everything work? I also would like to switch the 5 speed for an automatic if that would work out? Sorry for the questions but I am not a mechanic and need all the help I can get. One option if you guys can help, Can I do some work to the 4.9 to get a little more power and keep it instead of swapping out?

That sounds like one of those juice not worth the squeeze things. You’ll need a new harness and ECM along with accessory drive if the 5.8 doesn’t come with them. Probably a new radiator and fan setup. I’m not sure about the transmission swap but if the transmission requires a TCM there’s a bunch more money and complexity. When you’re done you’ve spent a lot of money and added next to zero value to a 96 F150.

Sorry if this sounds harsh.

Not harsh at all Don, That is what I want to hear"the truth". I would like some more power to pull with but I guess that will be hard to do, The old truck has done a bunch of work for me the past 22 years I have had it but the 300 6 cylinder needs some more juice.

I just saw this. Everything will bolt up, you'll want to find an E4OD if you want to keep the OD. You'll need to check the computer pinout as well, but I *think* you might get away with just changing the engine portion of the (maybe even just the injector harness) harness and then you'll need the trans harness as well. I'd try to find a wrecked 96 V-8 and look at the harness it might just be some swapping around and no cutting and splicing.

You will need everything from a the donor vehicle that the 351 comes out of. It will be EEC-V computer controlled and if you don't have the engine harness and the computer and factory MAF and injectors, the vehicle will never run right. AOD for a 4 speed is the easy way. AODE is electronicly controlled and a lot more work. The other easy way to do it is with a Holley Terminator kit for a Fox Mustang.
