Flattened Epoxy???

Hi all. New member here and an extreme novice to SPI and painting in general.

I restored the Styled Steel wheels on my '66 Mustang GT this year and was well pleased wit the results. I bead blasted the painted surfaces and applied two coats of black SPI Epoxy.

I now want to prime the centers of my Torque Thrust D wheels as I just don't like the light gray look on the car. However, I'm afraid the Epoxy will have too much sheen. Is there a way to flatten it any? I have a couple of threads that stated it has more to do with gun setup than a flattening agent. As I said, I'm no painter so I really don't know what that means. Any help would be appreciated.

Make spray outs, use fast reducer and spray it at higher pressure, lighter coats and it may give you the finish you are looking for.

JimC has also added a bit of flattening agent to it and says it makes it spray smoother and obviously would lay flatter.

So play with spraying settings and application and you may make it work.

I don't try to play with the epoxy anymore for a flat finish, the SPI #2201 Flat Black works perfectly every time, and looks the same every time. Used over epoxy as sealer, it's bulletproof and so easy to spray. Just my 2 cents.

nothing wrong with flattening the epoxy. the spi and most flatteners will work just fine. it doesnt take much to get it to tone down the sheen. it does make it spray alot nicer. a little flattener and some reducer make a night and day difference actually. with all that said i have to second what crash said. i would spray a coat of epoxy just for adhesion then spray a couple coats of the matte black ss.

Thanks guys. I assume the matte and flat are the same? Would the Epoxy with the matte hold up better than powder coat? You feel like the Epoxy for sure would as it seems tough as nails when cured.

the durability of powdercoat is no different than with paint....its all in the prep. i have seen powder peel and chip just like paint does so impossible to compare the two. only plus with powder is its thick so in a high wear application it takes longer to make it through the color. i have painted tons of wheels though with epoxy and ss. durability is fantastic if prepped right
