First post. I need some primer and paint (and advice) for steel wheels.

Hello,
I am getting some bits back from sandblast today.
8 steel 16" wheels.
2 axles
steering rods.
Steel bumper.
engine and gearbox mounts.
4 leaf springs (leafs were separated.)

I am not a painter by trade.
I need some advice.
I have a suitable air supply and a Binks #7 gun. (I need to pick up an inline dryer though)

My wheels will be land rover green and the rest will be black.
What primer and paint should i use. I was told to check out SPI over on another forum. I am thinking epoxy.

How much primer (and other chemicals) will I need?
Can I use a dupont code or similar to spec the paint color green?
How should I prep the workpieces?
Is there a distributor near zipcode 28557?

Regards,
Kevin

Kevin,
Pieces should be either DA'd with 80 or hand sanded with 180.
Clean with 700 waterborne and dry with clean towel be fore it drys, not a bad idea to wash twice, just to be safe.
Let set an hour and spray two good coats of epoxy, next day you can shoot the paint.

I would look at Grey epoxy because of the green, unless it is a dark green, then go with the black epoxy.

BarryK,
Thanks for the reply.
What is DA'd?
What is 700 waterborne? wetordry paper?

I would do as Barry suggests. I would also mix my epoxy a day before your going to spray it. It's kinda easy to run if freshly mixed and seems to resist running the more it sits. You'll be doing a lot of double coating with wheels and little spray time might mean a runny mess.
