Final Sanding

When following the "Perfect Paint Job" paper and you wet sand the last coat of Epoxy Primer before the base coat is there still value in using the blocks with 500 grit wet? Does it remove enough material that it could be visible if just done by hand?

Thanks

If your going for perfect then block thru the entire job. Yes it will remove enough material just don't use your hand except in those areas that a block can not be used.

Fingers/hand sanding are ONLY for scotchbrite crevices. Finger/hand marks will show as ripples in the slightest of sanding if you already have it flat.

If you know what you are doing, you can use a soft pad or a palm just to smooth out texture. If you don't know what you are doing, sometimes using a block won't save you, or using it improperly can create worse imperfections than if a soft interface pad was used. So there really isn't a clear-cut answer for a hobbyist, other than to learn the blocking procedures, and carefully observe the results. Try to connect visual imperfections with flaws in your technique, then do things slightly differently the next time.

I did not do a great job at this final sanding and I had to have Barry come to the rescue today. We had to cut back on the reducer to get the orange to fill the sand marks. Took 2 coats at 50/50 and 3 more with a 10% reduction in reducer but it came out nice (but took forever waiting for the "perfect paint job" time between coats. Started at about 2:30pm and finally finished cleaning up at 9:00pm. Layout the stripe tomorrow and shoot some UC! Some with a flash some without as it was dark by the time I finished. A damn moth landed on the paint because I did not finish before it got dark but it was where I am going to paint black tomorrow anyway. It was almost dry and he got away be left the "moth chalk dust" from his wings on the surface.

As for the bugs, always use Yard Guard in and around the shop, works extremely well with no effect on the job.

Man I miffed the stripes. I sprayed on the black and the orange started coming through the black like little pin heads. So I sprayed more on (yes that was the WRONG thing to do) and got a nasty run. I walked away and wet sanded it out tonight. I have the hood done but the trunk needs more sanding in the morning and another shot or two.

The best advice I know of is learn from your mistakes, we all have done something sometimes on purpose and it didn't go as planed that is how we all have learned. Without making those mistakes none of us could really and truly teach anyone a dam thing, So don't beat yourself up too bad just learn from it. Keep up the good work and do the best you can.

Yea, but I want to learn something meaningful not stupid stuff. I am making mistakes that I know better…...

Your list of what not to do is growing. This is experience and the old saying is "experience is the best teacher."
My first couple of paint jobs there were no internet forums. Thank God for places like this that a person can go to for help from experienced professionals.

every mistake is meaningful you learn from them, so it is not stupid stuff. If in fact you knew better then to do what you did wrong then mabey you need to look deeper into the problem or mabey you don't know as much as you think you do. either way learn from it what sems stupid is in fact a learning experience.

Most of the mistakes have been from rushing it and not taking my time and being certain I was ready for the next step.
