Evercoat Metal-2-Metal over SPI Epoxy?`

Hi,

I understand that it is best to lay down the epoxy primer on the bare metal after the metalworking stage. And then do filler work over the epoxy primer.

I'm using Metal-2-Metal to fill the sail panel seam on my 1968 Camaro. It's filler... so I suppose it should be over the epoxy primer. But then again, it is a metal reinforced filler so maybe it should go under.

Which way should it go?

It could work either way, though the agreed best method is over spi epoxy.

Now, something else here I'm sure someone else will comment on. I've personally used the USC version with no known issues and Jim C which is a top end member here has used it a long time with no issues. But the first time I posted a specific use recommendation of it to someone, several other long time members mentioned issues with it. I haven't used it since. I think some of the complaints about it were it's overglorified as to what it is, not as waterproof as advertised, & if the yankee winter road salts manage to get to it, I can see where it would go to hell pretty quick.
 
i have used it both ways. no problems either way. the one i always used was metal-2-metal. never used the usc stuff. i never had an issue with that. a few people have said they had issues with usc. my typical areas i would use it for was over weld seams or those areas that you would typically lead. i have never had the stuff shrink or crack. i personally think its some really good stuff and great for what i used it for. usc i cant comment.
 
I also used some metal 2 metal on my cab where I had weld seams. I always used it over epoxy, and as an extra step I brushed epoxy over all my welds to make sure I didnt have any pin holes that I missed. It does sand fairly hard so be very mindful with your spreading. I used metal 2 metal to get close to where I wanted to be then finished off with regular filler
 
The thing about these so-called metal fillers is that they are strictly for looks. Some shops don't want to be seen as using "Bondo," so they use the metal-looking stuff because it masquerades as lead. That's its only reason for existence. So when we are doing things the right way and putting polyester filler over epoxy, using the metal-looking stuff is even more pointless, since obviously you can't put metal on epoxy, so no one will be fooled. So might as well use something that is friendlier to work with. If you need strength somewhere, short-chop fiberglass filled polyester filler is stronger and easier to use.

Just my take, I'm sure these aluminum powder filled materials can work fine if a person really wants to use them.
