Euro 2020 1.4 Tip

New to the SPI forum as this is my first post.

I own a body shop that does very high quality work. I personally do all the painting and have been using the Euro 2020. I really like the clear and being able to tailor it to whatever I need. I have been using it for about 6 months now. I have been painting for about 30 years and have used pretty much everything as far as clears.

My go to tip size has been a 1.3 in my Iwata LPH400LV. I have shot UHS clears to lower solid clearcoats with that size. I have been looking through the tech manual and notice a reoccurring , I guess recommendation, to always use a 1.4, never a 1.3. I was just curious as to why that is in the tech manual as the go to size for a clear gun tip. I looked through the forum for an answer but did not find anything. Thanks

I am guessing from the amount of views and lack of response, no one wants to venture in this topic. I will just say that my question is not a point of criticism just an observation.

My experience with this clear has been positive with a 1.3 in my Iwata LPH400LV. It is my go to tip/nozzle size for clears. That being said, a 1.4 may work for some. So much depends on application speed, distance, clear reduction as well as other factors. A Sata user may love the 1.4 in the Iwata. I do not. I enjoy the extra bit of control that the 1.3 allows me to have. A Sata on the other hand is much more aggressive with material application and requires a bit different technique than the Iwata. Neither type of spraying is right or wrong, just a personal preference.

I believe the statement in the tech manual and I quote, "Never use a paint gun with a 1.3 tip. Use a 1.4 Only", is a personal preference, not something that is a hard fast rule for any clear. There are always recommendation, which this is, but there are to many factors involved to spraying to make blanket statement as this.

Just my thoughts. You may agree or disagree but for someone starting to use this product, it may be misleading. Perhaps recommendation would be a better choice of words.

Like you said, it all comes down to personal preference. If you are satisfied with your results, that is the most important thing.

Lots of people here like the Iwata LPH400 for clear. I think the reason for the 1.4 tip recommendation has to do with the solids level of the SPI clears. You can get away with a 1.3 on the Euro because of the lower solids content, but I don't think Universal would shoot well with it. I have no experience shooting clear with an Iwata as I've been a Sata guy for over 20 years. Perhaps Barry can comment and clear up the confusion. Or text Barry your question on the Tech Line and he will give you an answer.

Yeah I think you are right on with that Chris, it is personal preference. I have been using Iwata guns for about 15 years now. I have experimented with the 1.4 but don't care for it myself. I have shot Ultra High Solid clears with a 1.3 as well as lower solids. The main thing it comes down to is technique. I do not over reduce the Euro clear as I like to run a clear on the thicker side, just my preference with my setup.

Thanks for the response. Not a huge deal for me. I use what I like. It is just for some, they may not exactly know they can use whatever works for them.

The only thing I know for sure is the Euro can solvent pop with a 1.3 Iwata under "perfect storm" conditions. I've only had it happen a few times after shooting hundreds of jobs, but they show up sometimes hours after finishing. The first thing Barry asked me was if I was using a 1.3. Started using a 1.4 with the fluid turned out 2.5 turns from closed and haven't seen it since.
