Epoxy over POR

Thanks in advance for your help. I have a rear axle housing that had por put on can I use Spi epoxy over the por then repaint it. Thanks KB9GIB

POR doesn't play nice with other paints, to prevent delamination in the future I'd media blast to remove it all, and then apply your epoxy. Then you'd have something that your automotive paints readily adhere to...

Do you know what surface prep was done before the POR was applied. I have sprayed epoxy over POR with no ill effects, but if the surface prep was questionable, then its really a no-brainer.

The por was put on a rear axle housing it was sanded down and the por was applied. I think I’ll just strip it down and start from scratch. Thanks for your help. KB9GIB

Very smart move, no matter what brand epoxy you use.

I hate to hijack this but I NEED to ask, what IS por-15? I tell everyone to avoid it and just use spi epoxy and I end up having to explain why and I just get tongue tied.

Under other products there is a really good thread titled Why you never use por-15 ever!!!! . Really informative and thorough. Has 52 replies. Hope this will help you. I've shown it to others several times.

That was a thread I started.

POR-15 is total crap that has no business in this line of work or any line of work that I can think of for that matter. If it is good for something it has no use in all the different things I do so for me it's crap. If it's designed for bridge painting that might explain why our bridges are rusting away and in need of replacing, short of that I really don't know. My guess is someone dropped some major coin in developing the formula and was connected in some way that they got enough ground speed in marketing the stuff to make enough of the naïve people "drink the cool-aide" to the point that they keep making it and others have copied it and marketed it under different names claiming to do the same thing, it's all junk.

This thread shows you what you can and will expect to happen with your project if you choose to use it. The thread photos got lost when the site changed so I reposted them but they show further down in the thread so you will have to read and go the photos to see as the story progresses, sorry about that but I'm sure you should get the idea.

Datec, as much reading as I've done here, I'll admit I've never read your por thread.
Combined with the little bit I knew of it (never tried) combined with your name being in front of the thread title, that was good enough for me.
I've seen people on tv shows use it under cars talking about it permenantly encapsulating & eliminating rust. YEA SURE
I was born at night, not last night.
