Restoring a 68 F250 and have stripped the majority of the cab inside, topside and underside using 80 grit, stripper wheels, wire wheels, end brushes etc. but there are some spots of original paint and primer remaining. There is a lot of area to strip on a truck bed. Plan to hit everything with 80 grit prior to priming with SPI Epoxy. I want to provide my customer with a long lasting reliable finish but don't want to spend unnecessary time stripping areas when it may not be required. Do I need to remove all old primer and paint? All paint and primer is original. What type of primer did ford use? I believe the paint was acrylic enamel.
Many thanks in advance. Really appreciate this forum.

I used a red pad and lacquer thinner to remove 80% of the original lacquer primer on my cruiser skirts, from the 60s. It worked good. Made a mess. Then went over it with 80 grit on DA and was quick work after that

If it's in good shape you do not need to remove it all. I'm actually doing a '70 F250 right now, all the paint is completely intact (no rust, but some fading). I will DA with 80 grit to rough it up and remove the outer most layer, and then go directly over it with epoxy.

I would say whether or not you need to remove it depends on what your expectations or your Customers expectations are. Doing it the way you are is hard and time consuming so I understand why you might not want to remove it all. Me personally if I'm doing a job for a customer, the 54 year old paint is coming off. Whether it looks good or not. Media blasting the inner bed would save a tremendous amount of time.

Thanks all. Seems like stripping everything off on exterior surfaces and priming over existing paint under carpet and behind seat and other hidden area feels right for this job. I'm relatively new at this so biggest question was whether the epoxy would bond and seal over good solid existing old paint and primer. Sounds like it will, but stripping to bare metal is better insurance. This truck is amazing. Not a single spot has rust through. I've never seen one like this. I appreciate all input. Still learning.
