Anybody go from a Sata 5000 rp to a Devilbiss DV1 clearcoat gun? Anybody use a DV1 for UV or Euro clear? Pros? Cons? Thanks

Thanks for the response guys. Just was curious. I have had my Sata since new. 1.3 rp 5000. I work as a fleet manager in charge of 110 vehicles. My 28th year same company. We do everything in house. Been spraying UV 2011 I think? Get SPI from West County services in MA from Tommy (good guy). Not great spraying conditions, open warehouse. Have sprayed Universal at temps of 58 degrees 1:1 no reducer. Believe it or not laid out nice. Have sprayed UV around the 60 degree mark quite a few times with good results. Do a lot of bodywork in the winter months. I am a "wet" type of painter always pushing the edge for a slick wet finish. Sometimes bites me in the ass. Recently been using up some of less than great clears that have been sitting on the shelf= martin seynour fc720,fc740, high tek, nason 465,u pol, etc.. I love the universal by far. Usually spray all my clears the same setting with maybe a quarter turn in on the fluid. Just did a couple overalls with the fc720 and fc 740 4:1 wide open fan and fluid on 2nd coat 30 psi 63 degrees fast/ medium fast gun speed, 75-80% OL. Laid very slick run/sag free. Tried Euro for the first time settings were 1st coat 32psi quarter turn in on fluid from full, full fan, 75% ol, 68 degrees. 4:1:1.25 885 normal activator first coat laid out a little peely waited 30 minutes second coat 4:1:1.25 885 reducer thought i would try a medium gun speed, fluid and fan wide open, 29 psi,75-80% OL. Came back 15 minutes later had a real good sag on door. Have not had a run/sag like that in a long time. It was one hell of a curtain, humbled me real quick. Luckily the euro sands well and buffs very well after a couple days. Did not even leave any ghosting of the run. The Sata is a great gun but it takes me longer to dial in the gun when using certain clears. I think I should adjust my fluid in for the Euro clear. Any suggestions on settings? Anybody remember the strange looking plastic/kevlar Devilbiss OMX spray gun of the mid 90"s? I used to paint with that gun and ppg 2001 clear for some outstanding finishes, go figure! Again thanks for any input.

dv1’s are great guns. The base coat gun especially, sprays metallic base effortlessly. The 5000 RP is a great gun. It’s also a fire hose. If that’s your spraying style not much will replace it. I’ll spray with anything that is consistent and gives me a good finish. I’ve always been partial to iwata though. Satas are great but I never got caught up in the whole “sata is the best everything else is garbage” mentality. Just like guys that won’t own any tools other than snap-on. They make certain tools that are absolutely great. But many of their tools can be had just as good for much less $$$. Getting slightly off topic I suppose lol. Oh that fc710/720 can be sprayed with a blindfold on! Almost fool proof lol.

My love of Sata's stems from the fact they are well built, tough and don't break down. Precision machining. The HVLP will spray any metallic where other guns can't. I used a Sata 2000 HVLP day in, day out, for base for 15 years. Only rebuilt it once with a needle nozzle set. Find any other gun on the market that will perform like that.

I have a 5000 RP 1.3. Best clear gun I've ever used. Close second was a Sata 2000 RP. Anyways settings I use on the 5000 are full fan, fluid 1.5- 175 turns out (from fully closed) and 75% overlap. Approximately 30 psi into the gun (no regulator, digital) Works well with Euro and UV.

Thanks Chris for the info. I have read a lot of your posts and appreciate the knowledge you share it is priceless. I am going to give the Euro clear a try with your settings. Do you do a 4:1:1 mix on the euro or more reducer? I try for the slickest jobs I can for overalls. I see you use the sata 2000 for base. I just got a great deal on a like new NR2000 1.3 from a friend of mine. What psi do you like to run your sata 2000 for base? Much appreciated and will let you know how it goes. Thanks again

No doubt satas are good guns. I’ve had several 5000’s hvlp and rp’s. The 5000 is still my favorite of sata. But plenty of quality guns will last with minimal work. Also, plenty won’t. Funny story, first “good” gun I bought out of school was a devilbiss gti millenium. My buddy bought one around the same time. Decent guns for the time. Did nothing great but did everything ok, different tip sizes, etc. Long story short we both still have them to this day and spray just fine. Replaced packing nuts several times that’s it. Obviously they’ve been retired. I may paint a tractor or a snowplow with it or maybe some sealer but generally just sits in the cabinet. But, I’ve had plenty of old guns that didn’t last long at all over the years.

No way you are ever gonna convince me a Devilbiss is on the same quality level as a Sata. :) That Sata I mentioned did 15+ years of daily service. Easily 3500 jobs, probably more. No other brand of gun could do that. No gaskets to wear out or replace (no other gun can say that AFAIK), just top level machining. I only replaced the needle and nozzle set because I got a set free from the Sata Factory Rep at a Class I took. For me at least, Sata's are better than anything else out there. :)

Just stating how long those ones lasted with minimal repair. The dv1 is def a quality gun. Sagola’s have machined tolerances…no gasket. Also great guns. Lots of options out there.

Can we all just agree that sata offers the best......socks
