Dupont Cronar paint information/help

Hello group. Registered here hoping a few of you could give me some information on Dupont Cronar.

I'm a newbie to the painting end of motorcycle repair and I've got 3 Honda PC 800's to paint. Thought I found a deal from a painter who was getting rid of paint. Said nothing was wrong with the paint. Multiple sizes and colors, about 7 gallons, 45 quarts and around 70 pints. Most being Cronar, quite a bit in metalic, some it real beautiful colors, most of them full. Got all that for $45.

Then I discovered there is no information on Cronar on the web. Called Dupont, told they removed it in late 90's early 2000's. Tech support would hardly acknowledge that there was even such a product made by Dupont. Said all references to it were removed from their archives and destroyed.

Called the local Dupont jobber, his conversation was almost like I was conducting a spy ring investigation, cautious, hesitant, evasive. Finally I got him to open up. He explained that Dupont changed the product line and introduced Chromabase in short order to replace Cronar. They ordered him to dispose of the product and all paper references to it. Even though they reimbursed him for his stock, they hosed him for the cost of environmental disposal, which exceeded the reimbursement by a couple thousand dollars. He said I should do a trial and error with high quality reducers and find the one that works. So that was a dead end. Which leads me here.

First, was Cronar removed because of safety issues or quality issues? Seems unusual for a company to kill off a product line as abruptly as Dupont did.

Second, can someone tell me what SPI products can be used to spray this paint?

If anyone knows the story of Cronar's demise I'd appreciate getting the final chapter of this hunt.

There was some guy selling reducer and activator on ebay, but it was about 14 years old, that seems way too old for me. Any thoughts on old reducer/activator appreciated.?

I'd appreciate all the help I can get on this. Thanks, skye

Junk, pure garbage and many a shops put out of business.
The docks in Jacksonville, FL cost them millions.

Testing took place in shops, then they figured out they had amde a bunch of crap.

I'm trying to remember but I think you are right, all the US manufacturers went into panic and oh what results we got!
Cronar, Miracle Peel by BASF, it was a fun time for shops.

I remember thinking the Autonova was such great primer, until we did a resto with it and it all cracked the first time it sat out in the sun, cracked in a criss-cross pattern along the sanding block scratches. I've never seen anything like it.

are you guys telling me that these big companies actually had failures before!?!?!?!?! NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they are so big there is no way they could have failures...only the small guys like spi have failures and can ONLY make inferior products to them.

ok ok i'll stop now.

NO! Painter screw up. LOL

I remember the miracle peel, they blamed painter for a couple of years but once they lost most of their business, they fixed the problem. A true miracle!

I remember ACME's first urethane BC/CC system-the clear came off in sheets-I bet it was the same as Martin Senior and Sherwin Williams at the time.

I remember Acme's first BC/CC urethane system-the clear pealed off in sheets, I bet Sherwin Williams and Martin Senior was having the same problems since they all shared the same paint back then. The shop I was working in at that time (80's) did three Nissan pickups for Search and Rescue that were featured in Nissan Commercials-I remember how embarrassed the shop manager was when the clear was coming off those rigs. Before PPG's DBU system became popular the painters in this area were shying away from the problem systems and using lacquer for the base and Delglo DAU-82 for the clear and there was another urethane HS clear made for use over lacquer being sold by R-M that was popular.

holy crap i haven't hear the word cronar in about 10 years now since i used to work for viking yachts. cronar was dupont attempt at a safer iso free single stage paint. i used a ton of it on stuff around some of my previous houses. cures rock hard so it is great for metal railings, doors and other round house stuff. its much better than rattlecan for that kind of thing. i would never touch a motorcycle or car with it though. it never really looked good enough to me for that. if i remember right it was called polyoxithane. i dont remember the mix ratio. i would keep the stuff if i were you and just use it for stuff round the house. maybe you have a trailer or something like that that might need painting.

I remember that from the transition years, I think that was R-M's "RV" clear. It was pretty tough stuff, used it on MC work. Never used any Cronar.
