What if any downsides are there for adding activators to base coats? Also what ratios have you used with decent results?

A paint newbie, but what are the upsides?

Better base adhesion to the substrate.
It makes the base a little stronger.
It will help with metallic control.
It makes the base a little more flexible.
Gives better adhesion for clear.
Also, if you break through the clear when you respot the base over broken fresh clear helps avoid wrinkling (less likely)
Will help reduce stone chips.

Sounds like all upside!

Can activator also be used with "ready" to spray base coat? My local jobber mixed me up some metallic pearl for my English wheel. I'm assuming "ready to spray" means all parts have been mixed in the base already?

Yes since it’s highly unlikely he activated it. Ready to spray means he added reducer.

Thank you once again. Now I know what "ready to spray" base coat is. I will follow Barry's advise and add 1 ounce per quart of base.
