A buddy asked me to sell his 1967 Mustang for him.

Pretty solid car overall. Just rust on both lower door fronts, rest looks solid.
It was repainted at some point 7/10 and is fading.

Almost stock, HEI distributor and Edelbrock intake/carb added, but original included.
Also stock wheels/hubcaps included.

New upholstery, carpet and dash.

Engine/trans rebuilt and runs and drives good.
289/C4. Power steering, manual brakes.

He is in it $15k and hoping to get it back, or close.

$15k comps on BaT have good paint/body, so I'm thinking lower.

This would be so easy to paint, but I don't think ROI is there...

Some emblems/scripts were removed for paint that didn't happen. They are all there.

Mustang guys...any thoughts?

So I'm confused. He's already in it for 15 and 15 is what cleaner ones are going for. You painting it for free and supplying everything?

No, I'm saying it's not worth painting.
I think it is a $9-10k car now.
If I give him a deal and paint it for $5k, no change in return.
 
I wouldn't even think about painting that car. Just looking at the problem areas that are visible that thing has so many skeletons hidden.

Take it to Maaco if you really want to spruce up a pig to try to sell it.

Dont put yourself in a position of doing a fuck ton of dirty work so he can try and recoup money he already lost.

Front of door looks like it's sagging, hinges may be worn or needing adjustment.

Trunk floor and gas tank look replaced. That would coincide with the rust shown in the door. Center of bumper looks pushed in or pushed up from this view.

Although the rust hole isn't that large for the car given its age, the appearance inside lends that it's seen quite a bit of moisture. One would expect similar conditions elsewhere and you don't: fender bottoms, lower quarter behind B post, lower quarters behind wheel opening, leading edge of hood, rear edge of trunk lid, stovepipe (fresh air intake) vents in the cowl. If you don't see anything in these areas, look for filler that may mask the repairs. No bubbling at bottom of fenders or quarters? Have you checked the frame rails and boxing for rust damage?

Note rear edge of fender had paint chips prior to the last respray that weren't fixed properly. Worn hinges? Door almost looks like a different shade like only part of the body was sprayed.

At first, I was going to say the shock towers looked good, but those plates bolted on just in front of shock towers don't belong. Note the seam sealer on the leading edge, that isn't like that from factory. Something hiding underneath that plate, the typical rust scale you always see on these. Someone's also mangled the schitt out of the core support on either side of the radiator.

All the engine upgrades and it still has single exhaust? Rear valence shows damage, may have been what tweaked the bumper. from this view the left quarter looks darker than the rest, and the right quarter (in front of the extension) looks a paler color than the rest of the adjacent panels. Perhaps a reflection of the ceiling?

All in all, I would expect to find similar damage to the door corner elsewhere in the car. As is, its presentable, and a solid entry level car for someone. I'd sell it as is, even if he has to take a slight loss. Hate to see you get started and the can of worms shows up, the car likely isn't worth what it would take to fix. If it was a fastback or a big block car it would be a different story.
 
I have to agree with the can of worms theory. Unless that 59 year-old car has been in a museum all its life or most of it, there are most likely lots of things hiding. Heck, when I worked on those cars in the early 80s, they were rusty.

Maybe there’s more to the story?

I definitely agree with the perfection part! I’m going to be scared to carry my weed whacker through the garage after I paint my Duster. (my first paint, so it won’t be perfect. But that first scratch will still hurt.)
 
As a guy who has done several mustangs I would say sell as is. There are no demands for low option coupes. If you want to know what the car options are check the drivers door tag ( that metal tag has the vin # that should match the title) I would bet that there is rust in the lower cowl as this is the number 1 area these cars rust. My thought as for price 6 grand if he’s lucky.
