Im a big fan of the makita 9227C slow speed sander for preping metal from old paint to fresh bare metal for SPI Epoxy. I use the 3M 80 Grit Regalite open coat disks (8") on a 3M Hookit Disk Pad. I am always wearing out the outside edge of the 8" disks on the outside. I change them out with a lot of good sanding material left. Im thinking if I got a 5" Disk Pad, I could put the used 8" disks on the 5" pads, trim them to fit, and use them over again. Does anyone ever do this? Anyone have a good source for these 8" sanding disks?

Chad, yes its a sander polisher. It runs on a variable speed dial 600 to 3000 rpm. Its the fastest, easiest, and most econimical way I have found to strip paint. On the 300 rpm setting, it gives great control without removing too much metal. Eats layers of paint off easy and fast. I did get my smaller pads in and cut down the used worn out pads I have been throwing away. Works very well. Not only reclaims used pads but gives access to much smaller areas. I originally started with the 8" pad. Now I have a 5" and a 4".

been using my makita and dewalt buffer with a 3m 8" stickit pad for prob 15 years now. strip paint with it, sand wood, whatever i need.

Well the verdict is in. I cut some used 8" disks down to 5" and 4" diameters. They worked awesome. Get in tighter spaces and just like starting with a brand new disk. With the variable speed, I can control the speed to just barely move and grind away at a vary slow rate without clogging the disk. I wish I had saved more of the used 8" disks.

Another up date, went from 8" disk down to 5" and then used the 5" and cut it down to the 4". Stadea also offers a 3" disk. All available at Amazon.coml. Search Stadea backing pads. Not sure how they will hold up on high rpm but work very well on low rpm for grinding off paint.
