Dirty 2K

N

Nor'Easter

Have been dealing with the issue recently-Epoxy comes out nice, normal dust nibs for being sprayed in a garage. The 2K on the other hand, is riddled with these little specs. Brand new CT30 filter, new hose, clean guns (LPH400 for epoxy, LPH440 for 2K). This has occurred three times, so not an isolated incident.

It doesn't seem like it could be the air, or me, because the epoxy comes out nice. Local jobber I get some supplies from mentioned chemical shock, which I could not find even one mention of online so I'm discounting it. Ideas???

More than likely if you see it on your second coat on flat surfaces or even on the sides for that matter it’s just primer overspray. It’s not unusual for me to tack in between coats when doing completes with the regular 2K primer, it just dries very fast. It’s never bothered me the tiny specks of dust because it sands right of and have never seen anything left behind on the surface. Maybe a splash slow reducer or even retarder if you’re spraying in warm weather. Also which nozzle size is your LPH-440? I have one in 1.6 and it’s only good for spraying epoxy, way too small for the 2K.

It's a 1.8 or 2.0. Sprays wells until the PPS cup starts to get really squished.

I'm surprised that overspray would cause that large of a speck but, I'd believe the idea.

Hard to see in the pictures, was just brainstorming. If you start seeing it towards the end of the of the PPS liner then maybe it’s worth trying a regular cup and see if you get better results.

2 things here.
Get rid of strainer in pps cups, for some reason last 2 months ive had a bunch of calls with them screwing up every product you can think of, never had any before.
2nd 2k primers can leave dry overspray on car so always start closest to the fan and work away from fan.

yes the regular 2k primer always left a very dry overspray and a gritty surface. not sure why but its only the regular 2k. the hb 2k primer sprays smooth and slick. i quit using the regular build stuff 10 years ago because the high build just sprayed so much better.
