Dedicated Primer Gun

I have been using a EVO4018 which is a knock off of the Iwata LPH series.
The gun has a 1.8 tip on it but lately I'm having to reduce build primer to get it to flow through the gun properly and thus losing build.

Thought I would try to get an idea of what is a popular primer gun among the pros before I regret buying something. So what are you using to spray primers with?

SATA 100 B F RP in 1.8 size, lays down the primer with minimal texture, little overspray.

For smaller jobs the Iwata LPH-300 in 2.0 works good, but I still prefer the SATA.

X2 on the sata 100b. Mine is a 1.9mm hvlp. I have had it for years. Easy to clean as well

If you can get over the fact that it's made out of plastic. I would suggest the 3M accuspray. Many different heads that you can use for many different products.

Sprays very nice, and clean up is a snap.
I think for collision work and smaller work you could make the 3M gun work. If you're doing completes and just bigger jobs you can't match a good dedicated primer gun.

Something to keep in mind is that the new PPS 2 is coming out and I don't think they've updated the accuspray heads for the gun. You don't want to buy obsolete stuff.

And me personally I prefer the SATA RPS mixing cups, so that pretty much rules the 3M gun out.

Watched a few vids for the 3m. Does it really atomize that nice?
Overspray control looks tight too. For a few home garage jobs it looks great?
Long live Shade Tree Mechanic! Watched demo with Dave. I miss that show and Dave saying "whoop there"

I use a sata klc with a 1.8 tip. When I spray slick sand I use 2 oz of fast reducer per quart. Lays down smooth with great build.

i believe the klc isnt made anymore and was replaced by the 100b many years ago. i have a klc-p. the one made for polyprimer with the 2.5 head. great gun and works great for poly and thicker wood finishes

Could be worn out BUT FIRST!!!!
Pull off the fluid tip and look inside where the needle goes through with a flashlight, a 32nd of an inch from where the needle goes out at the end look for a dried speck size of pencil lead (usually dried epoxy)
The primer will build on that because it is so fast to dry and after a small panel will start to spray like the primer is hardening in the gun.

my primer gun gets a rinse with carb cleaner after i clean it after priming . wash thinner is weak .

Thanks Barry. I will give that a try. Recently found out I need a $500 part for my diesel truck so the primer gun is going to have last a while longer.

i keep a ketchup type bottle full of reducer while priming . i rinse the nozzle out between fills. slick sand and such will settle in the nozzle pretty quick .

shine, a buddy of mine uses carb cleaner as well. his guns are always spotless. the stuff is strong and works well. i cant use it because i would need cases upon cases of the stuff to keep up with every color or material change lol.

I read to use some reducer between coats to rinse and it really does help, Shine I think it was you in a post a few years old talking about it. I had a bunch of problems my first try with 2k, I emptied between coats but what was residual must have started to set. The reducer between coats took care of all the issues I had that first time around.

I usually use carb clean in cans to clean, but I am very low volume on what I spray so it works out for me. The high pressure spray of the can really helps wash things down.

Anyone ever see bubbles coming up into the paint cup and bubbling through the paint in the cup? I have a Vaper 2.3 doing this and cant figure it out. I really liked the Vaper till it started doing this.

i only use the carb cleaner on final clean up on my primer gun . the vaper is only 39 bucks . toss it and get a new one .

Sprint, i am not familiar with the gun but you have a leak at the nozzle or a clogged aircap. On a good operating gun, if you block the airflow on the cap when you pull the trigger then air will bubble back in the cup. The air will go in the head when the needle gets pulled back. On your gun somehow the pressure within the cap is enough to make it into the head and bubble into the cup. Remove the head and check sealing the surfaces. Could even be a crack in the head or where the needle seats in the head. Who knows but your issue is most likely right in that area of the gun

i use a SATA 100b RP 1.6 for epoxy
3m accuspray with a 2.0 tip and pressure cup for the slicksand and high build i also sprayed raptor liner with it too
