Dash / interior painting

Hey all, looking for some advice painting the dash in my 61 Impala and it's my first interior paint job. Window is removed and I have the dash mostly stripped to bare metal- except for the tricky spots

First off should I remove all of the paint from the vents and tight spots or should a good scuff do,? Seems to be a ton of work to get all of that removed

After I prep, I'm going to spray some SPI epoxy, possibly some 2K depending on how good the surface is, blocked to 400 and then SPI reduced epoxy as sealer.

I'm was planning on spraying red base and then clear with some flattener. Any suggestions here on spraying the clear w/ flattener and getting it smooth as possible as far as orang peel as I don't believe you sand and buff the dash. I'm also doing the steering wheel and column- are those typically buffed?

Or should I go with a single stage? Any advice would be appreciated- thanks

Ah nice- yes all glass is out. Body is in 2k but want to finish all interior painting before I do the final sanding and painting on the outside

I didn't take my dash all the way down. Didn't need it. If I remember I hit it with 80 by hand then epoxy. Then 2k the next day without sanding. Then hit that with 400. Then base and clear. While the glass is out its best to get the headliner taken care of. I went with a printable steel tilt column and I repaired my original steering wheel. For the interior parts I went with spi production clear. Worked great and wasn't bad on the pocket. I've never sprayed a matte clear so can comment on that

Thanks, after spraying your clear did you just leave it as is or do any buffing?/ much orange peel?

i have a paintable tilt column and redoing my wheel right now

I just hit the big, easy to reach areas with 1500 2000 by hand and polished it out with my 3 inch air polishers. I painted the instrument cluster separately.

You don’t need to remove all the paint from the vents or tight areas if it’s still solid. A good scuff with Scotch-Brite or 400–600 grit is fine, and only strip to bare metal where there’s rust or peeling. Your SPI epoxy, light 2K where needed, block to 400, and reduced epoxy sealer plan is solid. When spraying flattened clear, focus on getting it to lay smooth from the gun with light, even coats and proper gun setup, since sand and buff isn’t done on a dash with flattener due to sheen changes. The steering wheel and column are normally sprayed and left alone, not buffed. Single-stage is simpler for interiors and often easier to get consistent results on a first job.
