Compressor Q

I'm flummoxed about why I get better results out if my $300 Harbor Fright compressor than I do from my $2000 Quincy. My gun always seems starved with the Quincy. I do have a 30 ft run of 1/2" copper for the Quincy and the HF is pretty much just straight out of the unit.

I don't know if there is an explanation but hoping someone has some insight.

What is your pressure at the wall?
Whats the on off pressure at compressor set at?

Put psi gauge (cheater valve, regulator ect wide open) and see what psi u got squeezing trigger with both compressors.

Did you solder the copper? Did you have any trouble elbows where you had to go back a second or third time if you soldered that you might have loaded an elbow with solder and gotten a restriction?

1/2 is pretty small, I always consider the run after the tank is basically more storage and another tank, but just hearing you have a run and no run, I might question the run.

Quincy's are good, but their valve discs have a tendency to bounce and recompress the air, but that usually happens when they start to get too hot and your compressor would be running much more to try to keep up and get extremely hot on the discharge side.

I did the gun test. Kind of weird.

Quincy: Tank is 170. Wall is 110. Gun set at two turns out, reg valve opened read 70lbs. 30ft hose.

HF: Tank 140. Wall 130. Gun reg read 45(?). 50ft hose.

And, I was wrong. The piping is 3/4.

So a 60 psi drop between the Quincy and the wall? What's going on there? I don't run my compressor (Saylor Beall 7.5 HP) at such high pressures, it's set to about 120. My booth is probably close to 100' of 3/4" pipe away, but I don't have air problems. So this all seems pretty strange.

Tell me about it! I'm almost ready to sell it and get another HF. I don't do more than a couple panels at a time anyway.

Seems like checking the gauges for accuracy and the piping for blockages in between the gauges might be helpful. Maybe even run a temporary quick disconnect right off the compressor and see what you get that way.

I believe you are correct.

What I would do is make an inline gauge, set up a new gauge with whatever fittings/chucks you have, probably even make it as a tee so you can hook up as a pass through. Then go to each point and plug it in to check pressure. This would allow the same gauge to help pinpoint the problem.

Its just why I asked about the possible loaded solder making the pipe act like a 1/4 inch pipe.

If you are having valve bouncing issues, turn the quincy down to 140 and lower that temperature.

I hadn't considered solder excess. Good thinking!

Use same hose for test. Use same everything except pumps for test. 70psi trigger pulled certainly ain't low. I'd open fan full for test.
Can you tap off tanks with another hose so u can pass air thru same driers regs everything?
