Compounds and glazes

Jim, looking forward to hear your impression of the Menzerna stuff if you get to try it out.

I don't have a lot of experience with the line and it's not like I do buffing every day or even every week, but so far so good the times I've used it.

jim, i buy 16 oz. not sure if they even make larger in the v series. i use to buy gals of the old version. you use very little so it last a long time. i did the 57 vette with less than 4 oz.
the pad cleaner and pad lube are killer .

Quick question little confuse with the 3M perfect-it
Are these the same just different part n# for US and UK?
3M 36060 rubbing compound(white top)
3M 06040 machine polish (black top)
3M 06068 ultra fine polish (blue top)
VS
3M fast cutting 50417 (green top)
3M extra fine polish 80349 (yelloy top)
3M untrafina 6068? (blue top)

if they different do they make less dust and wprk a little longer looks like they dry to fast.

What you recomend Menzerna? Not familiar with this brand whats the process you use after you done with you sanding. You use same brand pads?

Menzerna is more well known in the detail side of things, I've read about it for many years until I finally decided to try it out.

Menzerna makes buffing pads, or maybe they outsource them I have no clue. Most detail guys go for Lake Country pads and the like.

Locally I've tried pads from Meguiares, Chemical Guys, 3M and Presta.

The 3M waffle pads I didn't like them as much, it seemed like I needed to use more product because the compound was drying too fast, like it was being sucked into the pad.

I'm also getting more used to the smaller 6.5" pads and like them better than the 7-8" ones.

I think.i got the correct information on what to to order ones im out of at least the rubbing compaund from 3m to use the menzerna

danny, 3m has so many compounds and polishes under so many different part #'s and bottle color you cant possibly ever make sense of it. dont even bother anyway. use something else. if i am correct menzerna is german and has been around for a very long time. i have jst never tried it. i ordered some of the shc300 to try out. we will see how that goes. if i like it then ill go ahead and order the polish they have designed for it and totally switch to that. if i dont like it i will get a 4oz bottle of the chemical guys stuff. i really dont have a problem with 3m black perfect-it polish and ultrafina. those two products are fine. it the compound that kills it for me.

Yea im gonna try their menzerna SHC-300 first im sure im gonna go true my 3M rubbing compound first the last one i have i got it for free from a guy lol, them i will try their PF-2500 ones im out of the 2 step from 3M,,
JIM
What pads do you recomend from lake country i was thinking about the green one or orange for first steep,, yellow they say is really heavy cut,, for second steep i was thinking about green or white, for 3 steep black/gray.

actually shine turned me on to the hexlogic pads from chemical guys. i use those. i got a yellow and orange pad to try out and while the yellow is typically the heavy cut foam, i actually found the orange to buff faster for some reason. i used to use lake country though and when i did i used their yellow foam for compounding. they worked well but as with any new foam pad especially the yellow, you need to be careful the first few times you use it. it can burn the crap out of paint in a millisecond. what i do to new yellow foam cutting pads is take a piece of 36 grit paper, put the pad on the buffer, let her rip then by hand run the 36 over the foam face of the pad. this breaks that new pad surface making the pad more "broken in".

Ahhh ok good info,, so from chemical guys how many pads(color pads) you use for a 3 steep process..

if you sand to 3-5k the orange pad is fine. finish up with the black . i have several other color pads but have settled down to orange and black. orange to cut black to polish .

What about for for like 2000-2500 for like collision work what you recomend yellow follow by the orange and finish with white or black? This will be for ligh colors for darker color like black i be doing 3000-5000 for sure.

Collision and light colors I would use orange then white.

Kool thanks thats actually good the way i can buy their kit for tge 6.5 pads orange, white and black with their spray pad cleaner.

Thats the kit i started with olus i got a yellow. I am just like shine and settled on orange and black

This may be a silly question, but are you guys using these pads with a rotary? I've been using the v series with my da polisher and it works great for polishing, but I'm wanting to try it for color sanding. I have an adapter for the 5.5 inch hex logic pads to hook to my makita rotary. What's a good speed to start out with?
