Chromabase basecoats and BASEMAKER.

Update, a shop of ours was talking about sanding Dupont base and re-coating, something that has been a NO-NO for adhesion, I had made the statement somewhere here that when they installed the new jobber, they had a so-called chemist here and he was the one that said, "they changed the base and now you can sand and use a urethane reducer also"
The shop advised me when he called customer service, they told him NO-GO on the wet sanding of base, last week.

I know Dupont people read this, so why don't one get on here a just give the facts, so no one screws up a job?
We would love to have you and we would treat you with respect, good God, help your customers!

barry...if they (customer) post here being a spi user...they aren't dupont's customers. I'm willing to bet thats the way dupont feels...whether they buy a lot or not. sad, but very true.

Anyone should be able to call or email a DuPont Rep for the info.

I've been dry sanding(nibbing) and dust coating chromabase for ten years. Never had a problem with adhesion. My problem is Dupont is the local jobber and I really like them. Nearest PPG dealer is 45 min away. I spray standox whenever possible but it isn't always in formula compared to chromabase. Hopefully dry nibbing is OK?

What do you mean by that?
I used chromabase for years and always used SPI clear,
For all my collision repair I have to buy basecoat, and lots of other
supplies that SPI doesn't carry.
I don't use DuPont base anymore but still go to their store
for a lot of my supplies, they're always very happy to see me.
I have a great relationship with the guy there and he treats me very well.
and he knows I've never bought clear from him.
I still like Chromabase the best for ease of use but have found a cheaper
base elsewhere where I get better matches, That's more important to me.
I think most people buy from different places.

We do not recommend sanding Chromabase because you can give up adhesion.
Chromapremier can be sanded lightly because it is activated but you should
recoat with color before clearing for best results.

email esponse from DuPont tech support

My chromabase tech sheets says you can nib dirt spots as long as you recoat. That is all it says and the tech sheet is probably 4 years old.

jc, i'm not talking about a particular store that you or i may deal with. i'm talking about the company as a whole. isn't limited to only dupont, either.

sales are sales in the eyes of a store manager/owner. now, some of these big wigs up in the corporate office....they think a little different.

So which is move rock chip resistant the chromabase with the basemaker and the ounce of activator or the chromabase with the urethane reducer with 2 ounces of activator? Im asking because I have the chromabase I need for my car but no basemaker yet and if this works and is as durable or better it would save me quite a bit. And it is a heavy pearl/metallic color.

If you want more adhesion, put either one over epoxy primer and you'll
reduce rock chips tremendously.
I started doing that on all my customers bumpers and the results are
amazing. Reduced the rock chips almost completely.
And I never added activator to my Chromabase.

If I use Chromabase, I'd definetly use the basemaker.
It'll lay better and is more user friendly that way,
if you have to touch-up a buff through later, the real advantage
of Chromabase is it doesn't lift the existing base like the
urethane reduced basecoats. I had a lot less problems useing Chromabase
than I do now with regular basecoats.
People knock it because of the basemaker, but that's it strong point really.
It's just easier to work with, in my opinion ;)

I agree;)

Ok another question can I spray chromabase with the basemaker and activator then intercoat it with spi intercoat after say the 45 min flash time or What do I have to do?
