Can '70s GM Plastic Fenderwells be painted?

I'm very grateful to SPI and their support. The talent on the forum is impressive to say the least.

I'm doing a frame off restomod on my '70 Cutlass Supreme and would like to paint the plastic fenderwells and fan shroud in SS SPI gloss black to match the core support and firewall. The material is of course 50 years old but seems to be in good shape and are the originals. Is this even worth considering or possible or a giant can of worms?

Thanks, K. Lee

I've sprayed a few plastic wheelhouses and shrouds, including my son's '74 cutlass. I left them in black epoxy, but the procedure is the same. Cleanlines is the most important key to success. I started with zep degreaser, then dawn and water with a red scotchbrite. Blew dry, then wiped with 700 followed by adhesion promoter and epoxy. Been over 3 years and they still look the same. You would do the same, just spray your single stage after the epoxy. Should hold up very well.

Thank you very very much.
The fact that it's real world and hands on is even better.
Looks like I need to add a few more items in my order.

I've only been on the forum about a month but would like to thank all the posters for their contributions.
A lot of it is way over my "pay grade" but that's how I'm learning. Everyone seems respectful and willing to help the new guy's.
Thanks to everyone.

A big thanks to T'king for his advice.
Wet sanded with 320, water and a dab of Dawn. One coat AdPro, two coats epoxy, two coats SS black.
I did get some slight orange peel and dry spray spot or two. Sprayed with a Iwata Bellaria 1.4 tip, 28-30 psi @ 81*.

I was afraid to play with the retarder too much or reducer as this is only my second attempt at painting. So I mixed precisely 4/1. When spraying, the paint seems "thick" (to me). I have to move slow with a 2/3rds. or so overlap.
I realize there's a ton of variables to consider.
Happy 4TH everyone!
