Blending Reducers

Chris_Hamilton

Trying to be the best me, I can be
Temperatures are getting colder here and I have a lot of priming and painting to do in the next couple of weeks. I've got 2 gallons of high temp SPI 895. I've only ever blended reducers that are close to each other, i.e. 895 and 885, 885 and 870. Would I run into any problems blending 870 with 895? Or is that too big of a jump?

I'm gonna sit back and watch this thread, Chris, because I am curious about that, too. The weather here is such that we don't buy 895 anymore, just juice up the 885 with some retarder on the hottest days, which only get to about 90° inside the booth at worst. I would think that depending on your spray temps and job size, up to 50% 895 would be fine, but maybe not below 70°, where you'd have to taper that down to 25% or so max. That's just my educated guess. Some experimentation might be in order!

BTW, @Barry did once tell me that mixing reducers a step away was okay in a pinch, but I can't remember the exact guidance. Some help I am!

Thanks Crash. Kinda what I was thinking about how much.

@Barry Would I run into problems in terms of compatibility blending the 870 and 895, or would I be better off just setting my 895 aside till next summer?

I remember reading this at some point. http://www.spiuserforum.com/index.php?threads/mixing-reducers-ok.267/

When I find older stuff like this I often feel like this guy

I've done it many times without a problem, having only 870 and 895, but really needing 885. I don't see it as much different than adding retarder, but I may be wrong, and just got lucky.

Chris, it is not too big of a jump because of the ladder scale we use BUT the big concern with the 895 is below 65 degrees the one tail solvent is not going to come out unless its allowed to set a day or two.
Used in a clear, no problem, used in a base could be a problem, down the road.
