black single stage or base with clear for novice

wow, now you guys got me thinking on using SS. I was planning on using BC/CC, only because ive done it in the past. Ive never actually done SS, i kinda thought SS was old school. But with newer paints, I guess its different. Im searching because I plan to paint my jams soon, SS would be wayyyyy easier. not any body work in the jams, so Im basically going to sand, clean, re-epoxy and then paint. Im working on setting gaps on front end, and need to get the doors on to align.

So, I am almost done sanding my 2K on my first project, 71 Pontiac Lemans convertible. I have never sprayed a complete car before.

I read the above post and I am on the fence between SPI SS Black or Fathom Blue (Metallic/Pearl) base coat + SPI Universal Clear.

Thinking that I might have better results with SPI single Stage black because I know I am not going to spray it smooth anyway, and I could just sand/buff it until it is passable. I wouldn't have to worry about sanding through the clear coat if it was a single shage. My body work may not be perfect, but I am guessing that dark blue or black is going to show the same flaws anyway. Also with the black I wouldn't have to worry so much about tiger striping the metallic etc.

Am I thinking right about that? Or would it be easier/same for me to spray a metallic BC/CC? Or, black BC/CC like is discussed above?
I guess my question is what is the difference in degree of difficulty in each of these?

I think your thought process is good. Black will be unforgiving as far as your body work goes but will certainly be easier to paint than the metalic.

Good luck with it!

While it is true you don't have to worry about sanding through the clear with a single stage, sanding through the single stage to primer or sealer is just as easy. Single stage is tinted clear, so spraying it is the same as spraying clear. As far as ease of spraying, single stage, black BC/CC, then any metallic BC/CC.

I sprayed the door jams with SS, and I thought my gun was setup correctly by doing a few passes on cardboard....yea I know shouldnt use cardboard...found this out the hard way. It wasnt setup correctly and I had a lot of orange peel. I tried a small area to cut and buff and it got better, but I was mostly looking at coverage into the areas that are hard to get to, I may try to sand down the highly visible areas and respray later since I have the doors on now. All in all, Id say if the gun was setup better it would have turned out much better, and I only did 2 coats, the outside panels will get 4-5 coats with a at least 1 color sand between coats 2-3.
