black single stage or base with clear for novice

I'm new here and this is what I consider to be the best black show car finish I can come up with. This is Lesonal sb base Deep Black is the color to which I lay down 4 coats then block with 1000 to knock down the trash then lay down one sometimes two more coats and follow up with UTech 4.0 select clear coat with 4 coats and the picture is with no sand and buff

I have tried just about every combination throughout the years I have painted first place award winning cars out here on the West Coast and out of Havasu and I have yet to find anything better for doing black then that lesonal deep black base coat before I stumbled upon the Lesonal my favorite was SS 3 coats then block with 1000 and finish up with Concept but after using that UTech polyurethane I will not use another clear now that stuff is awesome and lays down as flat as flat can be and Sans and Buffs even a month down the road very easily

Sorry I just finished painting that last night and I can assure you there is absolutely not a hint one of brown in it however I what day will get a picture of it in the sun for you and post as soon as possible

For all the guys that are just learning let's make a point here that none of this is possible without having a perfectly straight surface to lay your paint down upon and one step I did forget is that yes I epoxy seal after I block my primer and depending upon how my sealer looks if it is not perfect I will block it as well as we're right back to the point I made above if you don't have a perfect surface you're not going 2 mysteriously make it perfect with your color and clear!!!!

Black will find ANY AND ALL imperfections no matter how small and minut they may be

I'd rather see it in sunlight as it looks to have a brown tint in that picture.
I think I figured out what your brown tent might be I believe it is the red lit sign that I have hanging on the wall in my shop LOL

Have you tried SPI black and clear? If not why are you recommending Lesonal base and Utech clear on an SPI forum? Seems a little odd imho....

Yeah, its the company line here, but face it, universal clear is a tough clear to learn to spray and the post if asking about a novice. The secret seems to be in the retarder to make it easier and spray better, but we have tried alot and I am sure once it gets figured out, it will be the top choice. If it is the only clear you ever try and can never get it right, one might never try to start another project again.
I think Better advice is Universal is tough, try euro or maybe the speed stuff and help him out that way.

My recommendation would have been euro or better yet SPI single stage for a novice.

the difference in clears is the solids content. most common mistake is hammering on a high solid clear with thick wet coats trying to overcome bad gun habits. UV clear is not for everyone. it is a very high solids clear. thin wet coats is what you are aiming for. many other clears have far less solids and will lay down much easier but also run easily .

also bb/cc is easier and shines better than SS is an old wives tale . same with more depth . i can get as much depth with one coat as 20 coats . dont fall for this old BS . i will never clear coat a black car period.

Honestly I have never even heard of SPi products nor did I have any idea this forum was part of a paint company!!! Sorry for the insult here it was not meant in any way shape or form to put SPI products down as I never even heard of them before I got this message and started doing some research and reading here at the site. I came across the site last night while searching black base coat clear coat info and thought to myself wow this is THE BEST paint forum I've ever seen so I had to join. I am most definitely now very interested in being able to check there product and hope to try out their base coat on the next paint job I do it sucks because their products are not offered here where I live but today I'm going to check into the availability through my paint store. I will also inquire through the storm hopefully to see if I can get any and all information on their products sorry for the mishap I truly am never meant to step on anybody's toes so to speak

It is really hard to beat the outstanding shine of single stage black especially if it has never been cut and rubbed. I have found that once black has been cut you never get back that outstanding shine that you get right out of the booth however almost a necessity to do if you're looking for a show quality. Just my opinion

Of course you can get it back. It's all in knowing how to cut and buff something. ;) Look back through this thread there are several nice examples in it. All using SPI.
2015 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Best of Show used SPI Epoxy and SPI Universal Clear.

I do the 5 coats back to back with 30 minutes between them. Used to do 4 and never rubbed through but I started to do another coat when I started cutting with 600 or 800 instead of the 1000 with long boards.

I like the concept of setting up and spraying once instead of sanding, re masking, and respraying again. If I get 5 nice coats I'm out of there. It's not better, it's just easier on my shoulders. I feel that I can work the paint just as flat.

It's hard to beat the look of SPI single stage. This caddy probably has 15k miles on it and last time I saw the car it didn't have any chips on the front of that hood. It's more durable than base clear. For me it's more work to cut and buff than clear but the positives out weigh the easier clear.

I though of another question if you dont mind, When you put that many coats on, what were the hood, door, trunk gaps were before body work? 3/16"? and after paint did you wet sand the gaps at all or just wet sand up to the gaps and just blended in with buffing? just thinking with that many coats, you would have to pre plan on the gaps before hand

@slammed57, paint won't close the gaps up much, but repeated rounds of primer will. We see this a lot in DIY or careless work. Edges should be sanded down very well up until the final primer stage, so that there is just a couple coats of epoxy and the paint job on the edges of the panel. Heavy buildup on edges will result in a very chip-prone job.
