Black Base+ Universal Clear Vs. Single Stage Gloss Black?

I'm looking for advice on what black to use on a 28 Model A Tudor retro rod. The only experience I have painting is SPI Red with Universal on 1 project. I have heard some seasoned painters mention that single stage gloss black has a different look to it than a base/clear black job. I am really wanting to stay away from a "modern looking" job on the 28 but I get way to much trash in my clear to even think about attempting a matte clear which is what I really wanted to do but anyway......does the SPI single stage gloss black look more old timey than a black base with UV clear?
 
hmm i dont think that any modern paint system looks old timey. ss does have a different look to it than a bc/cc but i think the only people that can notice that is us painters. no one other than someone that does this for a living will be able to walk up to a ss car and spot it. even many of us wont be able to tell the difference. i had a ferrari in my shop a year ago. all black, half of it was bc/cc and the other half was ss. you couldnt tell until you put some sandpaper on it.

I was at a big car show this weekend and there were a few old cars there including three model A's both had been totally restored in last 2-3 years and the one was painted with enamel for the so-called old time look, the other was a two tone base clear and the other one color with base clear.
All three were completed with top notch workman ship but here is what is funny at any given time there would be 4-10 people around the base clear ones and one person walking around the enamel one.

My wife really wants me to buy one as she loves the 20-early 30 cars but out of her mouth was "why would someone do such a nice job building the car and let someone that don't know what they are doing paint it"?

Guess what I put on the table for thought, is resale for 90% of the people buying base/clear would be best and yes there would be a few that wanted a dull old time look.

Most important if your keeping it, is do what pleases you.
 
i restored model A's for quite some time. the old timey look your speaking of was someone who had no clue how to paint. usually the owner. there is nothing dull about buffed lacquer and all fords of the era were sanded and polished to a mirror finish. now they were poorly maintained so in a short few years they would be pretty dulled down from mud roads and wind storms.

Hey, if it looks TOO good after you finish it, just apply dirt roads and windstorms until the desired look is achieved. LOL
 
you should see the pics from the assembly line back then. 10 in bonnets on a cable driven buffer . scary as hell.
 
Several years ago I did some black testing with different blacks. I wasn't trying to make it look old though. Heres what I used

Dupont Centari 99 black
Dupont Imron 99 black
Dupont jet black base
SPI black SS (old formula)
Nitrocellulose Laquer

The Centari Acrylic enamel looked the deepest and best. I hated to admit it but it did. I can't remember the outcome of the rest other than Base clear wasn't the deepest/best looking.

Our 31' Buick has a black laquer body with Dupont jet black base with HS clear. Nobody has ever noticed it at any of the shows we attend. High quality black laquer and high quality base/clear and the car just pops. I did the fenders probably 4 years ago and I probably would have went with SPI SS but they weren't making it at the time. Shine is right on about trying to match a crap job. Any product done correctly is gonna look great.
