Black base coat coverage.

Ok guys help me out and tell what I did wrong. I prepped a car to 600 grit, 1 coat of epoxy as a sealer, 2 coats of black base then it sat all night at 70 degrees. Came in this morning sanded out some trash and 1 small run. Put 2 more coats on and I can see scratches. Why hasn’t it covered? Thanks

your seeing sanding scratches in the surface of the base or you can see grey or whatever color primer under base?

Often colors like black that cover quickly with a thin, smooth film will show scratches that will usually go away when clear is applied. If your sand scratches under the base are true 600, then just clear it, you'll be fine.

Most likely Brian the scratches you are seeing is from not getting your previous sand scratches all out when sanding with 600. (I.E. 320 grit dry then 600 you are seeing 320 grit scratches) Are they consistent or here and there?Consistent would indicate that you needed to sand with 600 more, here and there could be grit getting caught between the 600 and the panels or deeper sand scratches that needed more sanding.

Edit like Jim said black is ok if you have a scratches showing because your clear will cover them. Metallic is a different story.

This is the first time I have used this base coat. It has a sheen to it that others doesn’t. Scratches are here there. I used a da with 320 then 600 the used a light gray 3m pad that is equivalent to 600-800. Same way I prep everything else unless it’s metallic then I go to 800 wet.

Scratches are normal under a real black black base because of size of carbon to get it black.
A few good bases, i only know of 3 like this can even show 1500 wet. Ignore first coay of clear will take care of it and no issue.
The gloss on the black means you used a resin rich base and you sprayed it right so all looks perfect from hear.
