im curious currently deciding to go BC/CC or Single stage SPI products i go to bare metal 3 coats of epoxy filler work then epoxy from there on out then a sealer coat of epoxy before paint. if i did spi base activated with 5 coats universal clear on top or 5 coats of spi single stage is there going to be a big difference in durability? i think single stage looks great in black but is there really a drastic difference between that and spi black and universal base coat has an ease of repairability just blend and reclear panel vs single stage youd just repaint the whole panel. just trying to see whats my best option here. thanks for any help

Some people prefer the appearance of single stage paint. I would think you'd get great durability from both options. The base coat is the weak link in the system. I suppose you could single stage, and add clear to the last coats, or single stage, sand and then clear over the top, flow coating it.

I have shot 2 cars with SS and then cleared. I could not tell any difference if I had omitted the clear..I think SS in solid colors is the way to go.

Currently working on a car with Barry’s black base coat and Euro clear - sure looks deep black to me - don’t know what the SS difference looks like compared to this

Im about to spray my door jams and backs of doors. I plan to shoot another coat of Epoxy first, and then spray the SS black. How long should I wait between epoxy and SS?

that depends on how thick the epoxy is put on. if its a 1:1:1 reduced single piss thin coat then you can wait 15 min. one regular coat 1-3 hours depending on conditions. 2 coats, 24hrs, etc.

I did 1:1, let is sit for about 2 hours. temp was about 70 degrees, 40-50% humidity.

Then tested gun a few times, but apparently didnt have it adjusted correctly, had some orange peel. Put 2 coats down within 30 minutes, like instructions say.

Going to wet sand it and see what it looks like, may spray it again. Its jams, so not terribly concerned about how it looks.

I can tell by the overspray on that plastic the gun was just spitting. That made you put it on way the thick and heavy

60 gallon Quincy, its got plenty of volume , I think it was just gun setup, I used a different gun to put down epoxy.

The gun I used for the SS is DevileBliss with 1.4 tip. had 30 to gun, I just dont think spray was adjusted correcty. I did a few practice strokes, seemed ok , but I should have had a piece of epoxied metal to practice on, to adjust properly. I saw the peel on the first coat, tried to adjust it out on second coat, but didnt get it right. I have some extra body panels Im going to test on to get it set right.

one thing that concerns me a little bit is the coats seemed to dry pretty quick. it was touchable in 2-3 hours. I figured it would have taken longer.

gotcha! Just making sure.

Check the gun. If its not clean or a port is clogged then the psi on the gun will read high when in fact its not. Dry to touch in 3 hrs is fine. Its really just flashed. That will take 24hrs to cure out

Not to sound insulting, but was that 30 PSI with the trigger pulled and measured at the input of the gun? What does the fan pattern look like? Can you do a quick hit on paper and post a picture so we can see the fan pattern?

I would get your gun, mix, pressure right and put a few more coats on that to level it out before sanding. Get a smoother surface and sand with 180, would be much easier. One thing I've learned with this epoxy, put it all on first, then put on another coat or two :) and then sand it all once. Amazing stuff.

I'm assuming this is SPI black. What catalyst are you using? (...and, as usual, I'll let the production pros take over.)
