Basecoat prices

My next project is a 1953 chevy 3100. My client picked out the color from a sample book he looked at from a friend who owns a body shop. The color is True Blue which is a Chrysler color. The sample card is for Deltron 2000. I received the following prices:

Local jobber: $838/gallon (Deltron 2000)
$377/gallong (wanda)
$466/gallon (Lesonal)
Friends body shop who can mix the paint: $861 (Deltron 2000)

I guess I'm cost spoiled having only used SPI and Wanda basecoat.

This is a high end ($100k+) build, but can I justify using Deltron 2000 for any reason? How is it better than Wanda and Lesonal?

I need to match the the color sample he sees, so is there much risk in the paint not matching the sample if I use Wanda or Lesonal?

ken if the true blue is a more modern color, say 90's and newer then the color from all 3 paint lines should be so close you would never tell on an overall. imo there is no reason to use deltron. either one of the other two will be fine. you wont be sacrificing anything. my friend who has a resto shop down the street does all 150k-1.3m resto's and uses nothing but lesonal. as i have posted before, i have used plenty of lesonal and even more of wanda and i really dont see the difference between the two. wanda you just lack the warranty and tech support that you really wont get with lesonal anyway since your not a akzo bodyshop
 
Ditto with Jim I have been using Wanda more and more . Just finished a 2014 E 350 coupe door and very happy with Wanda, But if your doing a 100k build why not go with a high line base and not worry over cost .
 
Dito with JimC, Now the ford cobra uses what they call a true blue and I have it in Deltron and some in Wanda for 2001 that I did the old deck lid and then a few years later the new deck lid, rest of car has never been painted, both match perfectly as each time I did the deck lid off the car because the kid would not trust me with the car. LOL
As far as I'm concerned answering your question Deltron is not better than Wanda, no ifs or buts about it!
 
If this is a $100k build then price is not an issue..... For real. He can buy and pay for the differant Co.'s paints to do a spray out and he can choose which he likes better. There may be just enough of a color differance that one might strike his fancy better then another and tinting a gallon or more of paint is a huge mistake you will wish you never did.
 
+1 to Datec. Seriously why are you worrying over a few hundred bucks on a $100k build? Customer can afford to pay you for spray outs. Glasurit, Sikkens any premium line that you are comfortable spraying.
 
Thanks for the comments. With over 130 line items of parts and supplies for this build, the cost of basecoat has by far the largest price variance. $900 price difference is significant, and my customer would be happy if I can give him the same color and quality for a big $ savings. Now if Barry would get off his but and develop a basecoat line, there would be no need to discuss this.:D

LOL been there once but never again.

Custom paint jobs always cost more it seems.
I can tell you from my experience with the 1955 3100 that it will take a bunch of paint to spray inside and out.
The paint I used required an undercoat at $381 a gallon and a top coat at $468 a gallon, so basically $849 per gallon. The cheaper lines sold it as straight base but the color didn't match perfectly and was lacking the blue pearl that shows in a camera flash.
I am checking to see how much paint I actually used to shoot 3 coats inside and out on that truck and will post it later.

Okay. Shooting 2 coats of layer one on inside of hood, cab, doors plus shooting the console, trim and entire exterior took 6 quarts. This paint mixed 1:1 so 12 qts RTS.
Shooting 3 coats of layer two on all of the above took 9 quarts. Again mixed 1:1 so 18 quarts RTS.

Honestly, I couldn't believe how much paint this truck took. I had started with 1 gallon of each thinking I would have plenty and kept running short and ordering more.
Cost of color alone was $1865. Customer wanted that color and was extremely happy.

This is great info, I have been looking for a guideline like this for a couple months and this is by far the most detailed response to a specific question I have had. Of coarse there are alot of variables, but a good starting point is great. I have a 72 C10 and will be spraying the entire thing inside and out like you mentioned so its great to see it laid out in detail. Im either going to have probably just enough paint or I will be getting a little more probably, Ive got 2 gal of Wanda, but it mixes 2-1 so not quite as much RTS.

Not to derail too bad hopefully, but if you dont mind how much clear did you use on that pickup?
 
The 55 has a lot of little pieces that have to be painted separately. Upper and lower grille supports, filler panels, window trim pieces, windshield trim pieces, etc. and they use up (waste) a lot of paint.
On a C10 you will probably use a lot less paint.
A general rule of thumb that I use for estimating the amount of RTS paint need is 8 oz per panel/per coat. For example: shooting a quarter panel with three coats would be 24 ozs. Now if you are doing both sides of a panel count each side.
I used one gallon of Motobase LV (Mixes 1:1) and 2 gallons of Euro Clear to paint this truck but I didn't have to do the inside or under the hood or inside the bed:

Thanks for the info, that gives me a good idea on what to expect and how much to mix. Think Ill had another gal of clear to my next order as well.
