Anyone mix color in clear?

It seems to me that basecoat/clears have more of a plastic look than the deep color look of lacquer paint jobs of my younger days. Would mixing color in clearcoat improve this? Has anyone done this? Did it result in a deeper color? What color paint type, SS or BC, would you use and at what ratio to clear? Would you apply this over SS or BC base? What are the pro/cons of doing this?
Thanks!
Bruce

If you want a deeper color, use urethane single stage paint, you can use just that or
clear coat it just like base coat.
You just have to let urethane dry a little longer before clearing.
It's also a much more durable paint than base coat.

I put a tablespoon or 2 of base in 12oz? of clear & put 2 clear coats over it.
Looked dull before i put the other 2 coats of clear.
So no, i wouldn't for final. I did it to bring back original color. I stopped blocking old original paint when i hit base here, there.

If I understand what you are saying, I think adding a little clear to the base may give you more of a plastic look as its the polyol causing the problem to begin with as lacquer did not use polyol. (my guess)
Other issue I wonder if your not making this a slight 3 stage and down the road may have matching issues?? Again my best guess.

My best advice is don't put base in with clear. There are times when you can do it in certain areas for a particular reason but wont get into it in this thread. As for doing it on the outside and then clearing over it with pure clear I see no real good reason to do it if the person doing the work has the skill set to truly complete the work. That is just a bad habit to get into that could have issues down the road.

I was thinking that adding color, of some type, to all clear coats would make the color look deeper or translucent rather than like a thin plastic coating. I guess its not such a good idea!

I also see no reason to mix base and clear.................BUT on a lower line collision repair may mix base in clear to jam in a part but not on outside of repair.
