almost there

i picked up a 5 ton unit for 350 dollars. i dont plan to keep the whole shop cool. i will have plenums down each side of my lift to cool that area. will also have vents plumbed into my booth. i do my sanding and buffing in there. the vents will be shut off vent so i can direct the flow. to be honest once i get jays 56 back together i'm done. july/aug i will not work in the shop. unless i'm in the build room which is a/c'd now. being 71 and missing both upper lobes i just cant do much even when it's not hot. summer i will float my old fat ass in the pool .

For the cost of new you can't beat $350, is the a coil built into the air handler? No pool here, just a well spigot with 56 degree water :)

It's been nasty here for the last 40 days or so. Not much rain, high temps running 90 -102 with 98% humidity at 6 in the morning. Humidity drops to around 60% at noon. This time of year the South winds bring it all up from the gulf. I turned 66 this year I can't work in this crap like I use too. Garage is about 1350 sq ft, insulated but no ac. Get up around 4, turn the exhaust blowers on and done in there by noon, start working on other stuff. Looking at installing a mini split also to take the edge off. Stay safe out there, between the heat, humidity and fires... it all sucks.
What about a port a cool. I've been thinking about one

I thought about getting one a few years ago but something about blowing more humidity into a space with bare metal didn't sound good. We had water cooling towers at my old work for the resistance welders in the building. Basicly a water curtain with a big ass fan, we would stand in front of them on our breaks to cool down but soon as you move out of the air flow it was back to sweating your butt off.
I think Shine mention something earlier about burying a water line and pumping it through a radiator with a blower to help cool a area. I'd be leaning more towards something like that. When I built the shop I was thinking of running pex tubing in the floor for heat and cooling but cost at the time was a issue.

wasn't me. if your going that route just buy a swamp cooler and put it on a cart. did that for years . had a 55 gal barrel full of water i would dump several bags of ice in. use it to fill the cooler. worked really well. i lived on the lake then so i already had humidity. the cost of putting a/c in will pay for it's self pretty quick with productivity . used units are out there. the one i found was only used a couple of years. only bad part is it is 75 ft from my box so wire was the biggest expense.

Sorry Shine, thought it was you. I'll be replacing my 25 year old 4 ton unit on the house soon so I might just put it in the shop. I'd have to put a plateform in and elevate it cuz of space. Need to put some die in it first to find the leak, thinking a-coil. Either that or say the heck with it and put a mini split in. I hear ya on the cost of wire...

i should have found a way to put it near the service box. i installed everything then went to get wire. i dont plan to cool the whole 40x60 . just the areas i will be in. plenum on each side of the lift to dump cool air on me while i work. i wish i had a smaller shop sometimes.

Just duct tape a bag of ice to the back of your neck and get to work.

You're welcome :)

I've been debating on ac in my shop its 1500 sq ft. No idea what it would cost, plus insulation. Probably more than I can. Afford
Get a 5 ton heat pump; we keep the whole place
70 degrees 24-7.
We also run a lot of three phaze and on the same bill $ 110-month cable and 75 dollars for light poles outside. The highest bill in the last two years was 1500 and something.
Alpine heating in Chicago.
A 5-ton stand-alone is about 2300 dollars
Delivered.
Our offices are about the same size as your building, so I have a 3 ton and no effort at all.

If it were hot in my shop, I'd consider one of these. Not meant to cool the whole room, just blow cold air on you.
Pretty innovative product and price seems reasonable.

I think I'm with the democrats on this climate change thing, its not good. I would much prefer the weather that San Deigo is so proud of, not much climate change there, just comfee weather pretty much year round.

Calm down Shine, I'm talking about the climate from too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. Its natural, been going on forever, but in San Deigo they don't have this problem. Its a joke for crying out loud.

If you watch the weather on a nightly basis, you'll see that many of the high temps were set, 50, 60, 70 or more years ago. It's not very scientific to extrapolate one Summer, let alone one heatwave and use that to say "climate change". I'll bet even our resident scientist Lizer would agree with that.

If you go here and read around some https://realclimatescience.com/, you start to get the idea that climate change may not be as cut and dry as they would want you to believe.

Cliamte change has been around as long as the planet has existed. It took climate change to bring the earth out of the ice age. How did that happen? Cows farting? Cavemen burning wood to keep warm?

If it manmade climate change was a real thing and going to end life on this planet in just a few years, do you think the governments of the free world would spend time regulating cows, and people's lawnmowers,, or would they organize their armies and attack the countries that are polluting on a massive scale? China, India, etc. Hmmm.

tornado alley has shifted from Wichita falls texas to Arkansas. we're getting the heat of new mexico here now. wait until the wobble comes back around and the solar flares settle down. we'll be burning the kids bunk beds try to stay warm. in 1980 i had to shut down my shop to only 4 hrs a day because of the heat . in 1984 i had to shut down a week strait because it was so cold. i was spending 1200 to 1500 dollars a month for just above freezing in the shop.
