Akzo Nobel Imperium

Im trying to put things together to paint my truck all over after a deer hit. Most of it is just a drop coat over sanded OE clear. My last project was a few years ago and I used Motobase that I sourced from Chad's and all went well. This time I thought I would try a local jobber to avoid the shipping wait. Wanda was local but it seems as though all are closed or stopped carrying it. One has informed me that they have replaced it with Akzo Nobel Imperium. Anyone have any experience with this base? I know Wanda is an Akzo Nobel line so wonder if they are similar. Using SPI universal clear.

Only thing I know about it is that it's Akzo Nobel's value line. Is it similar to Wanda? Don't know but I doubt it's on the same quality level.
It's probably fine for collision work.

imperium is wanda. wanda hasnt been replaced. wanda is available through jobbers only and akzo wanted to put it in auto parts stores like auto zone, etc. they couldnt do that without pissing off the jobbers so they put a different label on the can and now magically all is good. lol.

Good to know Jim:) Thanks.

Used it on the large job I did on a Suburban and work out really good. The price literally smacked DuPont and PPG's ass all day. Covered like nobody's business bought a gallon of Red and only used 1/2 to get it covered.

One pass. Hood with one pass. Side of truck one pass covered all grey primed areas and the rockers and lower doors had black chip guard covered all in one pass.

Good to know. That is what the guy at the paint store said in a round-about way. They are a Akzo line paint store and sold their Lesonal and Sikkens too. I guess marketing clouds the water sometimes. Thanks for the information.

I sprayed the Imperium today in GM Artic White WA9567 on my 2004 Sierra. Sprays nice. I will say it doesnt cover quit like MOTObase but I think that is what most say when they compare WANDA to MOTObase. The big dofference is the its 2:1. I had just enough to do my truck all over and cut ins. If I do anothe all over I will go back to MOTObase.

It's their second tier line so they can't make it as good as the line above it, so no it doesn't cover as well as lesonal, but the imperium you used would be the same as Wanda.

Their is not connection between motobase and Wanda.
But if you are comparing the two, Motobase does cover better. Which has it's pros and cons.

Pro would be that you use less material, but on some very deep transparent colors it may not look as deep, however they have a binder that helps add transparency when required. However I've never really used it.

My work is demoing Imperium wb right now. I do fleet repair. It's our own fleet so cost is a big consideration.
Imperium is not wanda, color formulas are different. It's an exact copy of lesonal. I have been comparing color formulas of all akzo paint lines in wb.
So far I have painted a motorcycle and all the parts to a complete. Rest is Monday. I have done a few test panels for adhesion testing. I'm new to waterborne other than trying Cromax pro when we were using mosaic.

I have used the colorbuild primer and their euro lv clear. Everything has worked good, abused the clear on a hood and no issues.

Other painter did a complete Taurus in 2.5 quarts, got reduced 30% so 3.25 sprayable.
Covers in 2 coats plus a drop. we needed 5.5 sprayable in solvent on same color.

So far it's going good, have to speed up as it sprays real wet.

I didnt know there was a waterborne imperium. Im not sure about that one but for solvent its supposed to be relabeled wanda. Thats direct from a national akzo rep friend of mine. Good to hear its working well
