After re-assemble, areas underneath in bare primer ok?

P

projectzj

I have to rivet on some metal body cappings on the corners of my land rover prior to painting. The metal underneath body cappings, and the metal body cappings themselves were sprayed with epoxy primer followed by 2k reg build. When I rivet the cappings on, the area underneath the capping will still be bare 2k primer, is that ok? I can't paint the pieces separately and then assemble because then the rivets won't get painted. Attached is a picture of what it will look like when finished, the metal body cappings I'm talking about are outlined in red. Thanks!

There are a few coats of epoxy underneath, covered by 2k primer. The 2k primer will remain unpainted underneath the body cappings, I'm trying to figure out if that is ok or not?

You can paint rivets by poking them thru a sheet of cardboard, then touch up where the mandrel breaks off if you are worried about it. I would not worry as long as there is primer back there. Any bare metal and its going to rust. You just need to think about what was under there that made you have to remove them to repair in the first place.

From "Perfect Paint Job" https://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/perfect-paint-job :

"When all of the primer blocking and any necessary primer repairs are finished it’s always best to use the epoxy as a sealer. Mix up enough epoxy to go around the car with one wet coat and adding a double shot glass of SPI 885 Urethane Reducer per quart. Let the epoxy sit for 30 minutes. Stir one more time and strain. Spray one full wet coat of epoxy over the entire car. The epoxy should sit for 6 hours before spraying basecoat or the next option is let it sit over night and wet sand the epoxy with 400-800 then spray the base."

You might spot seal with epoxy before riveting on the cappings, then proceed with finishing steps...

why dont you base/clear the panel then rivet the capping on scuff the area and then spot in base over capping and re clear?
