About ready to shoot this one. SPI epoxy, Wanda base in WA502q Inferno Orange. The mix doesn't have much metallic but loads of pearl. My question today is would you shoot this with a Sata 3000rp 1.3? It's really all I have at hand besides a Finex 3000 hvlp 1.3 and a Sata 2000 digital hvlp WSB. I have an NR2000 1.4 nozzle set that I've used on the wsb gun and it's usually worked ok but I don't know if that's a good idea here. So I think I'll have to shoot sealer, base and clear with the Sata 3000. Can I get away with it?

Btw... car now has an '04gto LS1, T56, suspension, elec headlights, etc...

Over the years I've shot a lot of base with a SATA NR2000 1.4. That's the HVLP nozzle set and it does well with almost any base or pearl. As long as the gun is in good condition that is what I would use for the basecoat. Reduce it the maximum amount, spray light-medium to medium coats. Don't try to get coverage in two coats. Probably more like four coats for that color maybe even five. Use slow reducer. Should work well for you.

Gun settings I would start at 2-2 1/4 turns out, possible opening it more if it needed, fan open all the way, roughly 30 PSI at the wall regulator. I adjust pressure differently than others, but main thing is no cheater valve at the gun, adjust the pressure till it's atomizing nicely. Test it on the wall with some masking paper.

Gonna be a nice car.:)

Cool Chris, thanks very much, I appreciate your help! The 2000 is nice, I only have med reducer ...and a can of retarder

Hey, would you shoot the UV clear with the 3000 or 2000?

For the clear use the 3000 RP.
I would get some slow reducer before I shot the base. Unless the temp is under 68 or so, I would use slow. If the temps start approaching 75 or so you will really want to use slow. Especially with an overall. Will help with everything laying down correctly. Medium is ok for single or two panels but for an overall it can cause some issues. It's been a long time since I've used Wanda but I'm pretty sure SPI reducers will work well with Wanda. SPI 885 is what you want. Double check with Barry about it's compatibility.
You don't want to use retarder in the basecoat. That's really only for clears and urethane primers.

Wow, ok that'll put me a couple days out to get some but really I wanted spi reducer for base, I got a gal of med reducer from the jobber but it looks like cheap reducer ...Finish Pro 5803. If I need to wait for a gal of 885 I'll take this back and go ahead and order a gal of SS black too for my bmw.

A lot of jobbers push cheap reducer because their profit is higher, and most don't understand the importance of it. Cheap reducer is nothing but problems. Definitely agree with Chris on the 885, it's what I use 90% of the time year round, especially on completes. ( I am in Texas!). I use a Sata NR2000 on all my tricky metallics and pearls. Really nice base gun.

I'll point out one thing that impressed me about just how high quality the SPI reducers are. PPG DBC sprays and lays out better with SPI than it does with PPG DT reducer. PPG DT is not a cheap reducer either. Just shows how high quality SPI products are.

And Slofut glad you are going to use the slow. You won't be sorry you did.

Thanks again Tex and Chris, yea I have way too much invested in this car to use cheap reducer. I wanted to get a gal of black SS anyway. Glad to know this 2000 is still a relatively good gun, I've only sprayed smalls with it, never an overall. Can't wait to get this done, been three years doing bodywork on a buggered up plastic car. At least it's nice now though.

No need to run out as we make another batch of all the speeds except 895 when we get down to about 150 gallons. Lol
For some reason, I have a mental block about ordering enough reducer. I will have plenty of everything from epoxy to clear except for reducer for the base. I just use the DT to wash my gun when my SPI order comes:)
