69 Fastback Mustang pro-touring build

Backyard Hack
This one is almost ready to go home. Painted roller with full Detroit Speed suspension. The amount of fabrication to install the suspension was mind boggling but it’s well engineered and should give a great ride. Minitubs, shaved drip rails, shaved markers, tucked and shaved bumpers, custom aprons, smoothed firewall, custom hood vents, subframe connectors along with some minor rust repair. SPI black single stage of course and a little SPI matte black for variety… :). Goal as always is nice driver quality. No SEMA cars or museum pieces here. These cars are built to be driven and are delivered in a reasonable amount of time with reasonable cost. That’s why this is my fifth build for this customer.

Excuse the state of the shop. I let things go when I’m in the final thrashes of a build. :) Will get a serious cleaning before I begin the next project.

Sweet work Don! I can see why this customer has come back 5 times. Once you find a true craftsman look no further.
Thanks for sharing

Very nice Don, I just put my Mach 1 into storage till next winter. Was looking at the DS setup and also the Roadstershop full frame. Did you move the rear frame rails inward to allow wider tires? I love the black.

That's gonna be one sweet hot rod. Lots of custom work from stem to stern.

That has always been a goal of mine but I continue to fail the "reasonable amount of time" part.
Nice work, Don.

I think sometimes guys get lost in the pursuit of perfection. My work is far from perfect but I’m an engineer by trade so I did a lot of cost-benefit analyses in my former years. These builds are a case study in the law of diminishing returns. I also learned a lot about project planning and execution. I carry that experience to these projects. Speaking of which this will be my final year for customer builds. Just two small projects left to go. Time to focus on a few of my own cars while I still have the energy.

Oh man, does this post speak to me. I too have an engineering background and love the project planning side of builds. I like doing the work too, but spend sooo much time on things I think not many appreciate or notice.

What motor is going in this? I suspect a Coyote since you have the room after removing the shock towers.

He’s planning on an LS7 disguised as a Ford. He’s calling it the Phony Pony :). This is the intake manifold so it won’t have the plastic LS intake which would give away that it is an LS

It’s expensive/complex to make power with the Coyote and he would have to relocate the brake master cylinder etc. The car is for his wife so he wants to stick with the LS power he knows well. He will be doing the remainder of the work. I’m supplying him with a painted roller.

Looks great. Did you do the bumper mods? any pics?
Yes I did. I don’t think I took any pics. Deleted the front license plate notch and made the rear end horns taller with some sections from a donor bumper. Both bumpers were narrowed a skooch. I also shaved the bolts.

Came across a couple of pics of the front plate recess delete. I used two pieces. I added the shape using my Mechammer planishing hammer. Took quite a few passes on the thick metal but I got it pretty good. No Pullmax here :). Far from a perfect job but a skooch of filler and they were good to go. Painted bumpers are easier than ones that will be chrome plated. I think i spent a hour or two on this mod.
