What do you guys think? Dad and I are thinking about going half and half on a new compressor in the shop. I want something that will last forever and be awesome for painting with plenty of volume. I thought this was a true 5HP motor, but maybe my assessment was incorrect. What do you guys think? 1 just an 80 gallon and one is 60

Get the qt 5 if you can afford it. It is a lot more compressor for the money, 80 gal, 1725rpm motor.

I have a qt 54, and I do like it, but if I had someone to go half way with me when I bought mine I would have went a next step up. The low rpm motor is worth it alone, it will be quieter and last longer.

Cool! Thanks for the input. I want to make sure I have all the volume I need for painting. I also want to make sure that I don't have huge problems with moisture. At least not extra problems with moisture. It sounds like this may aid in that compared to what I have now.

Quincy is a top-notch name, isn't it? I always thought they were. This qt5 compressor has two reviews on Amazon. One guy loves the thing and wrote a very long, nice review. The other guy left a one-star review because of manufacture didn't honor a warranty issue he had. does anyone have experience working with the manufacturer? Is anyone else using the qt5 for painting and maybe a little bit of sandblasting? All the input I can get would be appreciated! I'm thinking about picking this up this week!

I wonder why the 2 motors show different amps?
And the plate on the compressor is different than either one.

i agree with sprint above about the low RPM motor...that will help with moisture BUT I have a locally built one that is 80 gallon and low RPM motor and I still had moisture problems. I did everything I could, ran 100 feet on pipe with all the drop legs and went broke buying filters...until I bought the cheap harbor freight refrigerated dryer ! spent $350 and all my problems went away. There were several references to it here on the forums so I bit the bullet and did it. Before I would go through 2 qc5 filters per paint job at $50 bucks a piece ! now I have done 2 paint jobs and I'm still good on one. By the way I also wondered about those compressors cause I'm about due for an upgrade... I'm not sure though that the 17cfm's they list will be adequate to keep up with a sand blaster and cutoff wheel without the compressor running constantly

Pretty sure it won't allow for constant sand blasting, but I think it's be pretty good for a "hobbyist" or DIY guy who isnt doing whole cars at a time. Same probably goes for your cutoff wheel. That's a good observation. It isn't getting to.the high end of my budget though.

The motor has to turn around 1725 RPM or it's not a "true" 5HP. Fake 5HP motors usually say "5HP SPL" and turn around 3450 RPM, on the fakes the 5HP is "peak" and not continuous.

Good to know what makes the "fakes" fake. Thanks. Dad was looking at come cheaper tractor supply units. They're mainly all IR units. They have less CFM. I don't have the motor specs, but I'm sure they're probably less impressive than the Quincy too.

this is a 5hp motor . notice the lift hook on top.

had the IR tractor supply one....had to have reeds replaced every year and it runs loud and HOT....as shine said "JUNK" ! basically it's a very large tire inflator

i have a 5hp champion that is over 35 years old. bought an ir pump then had to buy a 5hp high rpm motor. will rebuild the champion and go back to 870 rpm. a 5p motor is big and heavy .
none build their own motors, only the pumps. i like Champion and Quincy pumps..

I got the QT-5 with magnetic starer for my garage was looking for one for about a year and score these one really cheap from an older guy 2 hrs drive look on facebook market place or offerup...

Also getting a condenser to install it in between pump and tank

Don't be misled by HP claims.
Check the motor plate and compare amps that it draws, that's the real
indicator to what size it is, not HP.
There are 2 and 3 HP compressors out there claiming to be 5hp.
Sears had a 3 hp compressor that ran on 110 volt, that's not possible for 110 volt.
when I confronted them about it they replied "well,,, it performs like a 3hp."
The cheap compressors have tiny motors that draw less amps and aren't what they claim to be.
My Eaton draws 23 amps, like a real 5 hp is suppose to, the motor weighs about 100 lbs.
Don't be misled by HP claims, read the motor plate.

The qt5 draws 22A and the motor runs at 1750RPM. I think that's right based on what the other fellas are saying. I'm gonna pick this one up tomorrow, so if anyone has anything else to say please by a means speak now! Sounds likes it's a good one though.

Danny, id definitely take you up on the offer but I'm in NW Ohio. Too far to come get yours unfortunately.

Any chance you have a Saylor Beall dealer near you? They used to be comparable priced to those Quincy's but are a superior product. The valves are a better (servicable) design. The pump is a 705 and they are built in ST. Johns (Lansing) Michigan.

The Saylor Beall is better than the QT but not better than the QR series Quincy that is twice the money.

Their site says my local distributor is up in Michigan.

I like my Saylor-Beall 707. We just run it with a 7.5HP motor and run the pump slower than if it had a 10HP motor. For the past several years, it uses no oil in between changes, just chugs away.
