57 Chevy

Good points.
Thanks guys I'll reach out to barry.

Anyone got a guess on how much paint I'd likely need - is what I mentioned above enough for a panel ?

Im terrible at estimating materials. But you will need way more than you estimated. I see you estimated 1.25 gallons sprayable of single stage. You will probably need doubke that. Last time i used single stage was on a 98 honda civic sedan. I sprayed it white. Even after sealing the whole car white i used every single drop of 1.25 gallons sprayable to get 2 coats of coverage. No material to spare.
You mentioned maybe clearing over the single stage, and estimated 1.25 gal sprayable. Again for 2 coats of coverage you will probably need twice that

Fakky,
I answered your private post to me, its long with history and my admission I have never used one but probably have a 150 plus that spot in cars in lot cars outside in dealerships and love them.
The big, however, the usually biggest job they do is a full honda bumper.

Re online searching id wants to see an allover painted, not a bumper to be convinced.
You are always welcome to call me.

Just for comparision, not exactly apples to apples just finished a 72 C-10 where I had something around $2800 in materials from SPI. That didn't include all the ancilliary things like tape, masking paper, sandpaper, etc. etc. Total amount of materials was somewhere around $3500. Slightly different in that I did everything, interior, underhood, inside the bed, etc, but if I had to guess bare minimum to do a truck like yours, exterior only, 1500-1800. Much more than that if you use PPG, Axalta, etc. Materials are not cheap and the labor ain't easy. Good your asking questions. We'll all be here to help if we can.:)

One last question (maybe)....... Im not sure its wise on my behalf to do my first paint job at $1500-$2000 and full everything ..... with a turbine.
How feasible is this with SPI epoxy.

Sand 320 the entire car. I dont think the paint is very thick
Bring back any suspect areas to bare metal. Smaller areas.
Apply SPI epoxy to the problem areas until it blocks (high/lows) in line with the rest of the scuffed truck well.
Then do a final 1-2 full coat of EPOXY across entire car.

That would put me at around $210 for epoxy.
Then go over the entire car in a SS black. Call that another $250

Gives me a chance to have a decent paint job that should last 4-5 years and learn to paint - rather than risk blowing $2k on something Im not ready for.

Thoughts ?

Also, im glad your paying attention, since we cant assure you the rest of the spi products will work out of the turbine, agree with you it could be a risk.

Thanks. I think that might be a safer route first shute out of the box.

I cant comment on the turbine system.
But I think youll be happy with the single stage for what youre doing. Ive yet to use the SPI single stage but im confident its a great product based on reviews. Single stage in general is pretty user friendly especially for beginners. A good single stage job looks just as good as a base / clear.

My buddy sprays with a turbine in his garage. It took him some time to dial in the equipment, but man does he produce some nice work with it. It's got me thinking, but im just tired of spending money on tools.

Theres lots of them but they run around $500 ... this is the one I bought.

I only went this route for a few reasons

1) I work on my truck(s) out of a carport ....... so contamination is real no matter what
2) I have a small lot with no real space and no easy way to hookup 240v for a larger compressor.
3) I have 2 investment homes - I do a lot of deck and fence staining and projects - about to do a respray of outdoor metal furniture and screened in porch .... this will do all that.
4) Whilst I know its not as good a system do to design - people are able to get a good paint job. Check out post #369 on page 13 here

5) I often move houses. Usually every ~ 5 years.

Time will tell. When Im retired I'd like to have a full garage setup for all mytools and I'd like to get a full size compressor attached then.

Just ordered the epoxy primer

Fastest shipping I've seen (probably even amazon)
And best packed item I've seen.

If the products half as good - we are onto a winner !!
