57 Chevy Roof

T

Toms 57 Chevy

Hi all, I am new to SPI and have used the epoxy white primer. This stuff is great. I wished I had know about this before I started my body work a few years back. I took the paint to bare metal and used Matrix epoxy. I made body repairs and used some slick sand filler. I then sperayed a couple of coats of SPI and blocked. I just sprayed some more SPI to do the final blocking. i love the shine to show the low spots. My question is how do you guys paint such a large roof. I am 5'7 and trying to shoot the roof was tuff. This is my first paint job and I am trying to fiqure out all the little things before I paint in the spring. I am open to any suggestions.
Thanks

First off welcome to the board!!!!

Im over 6 foot, but I still use empty 5 gallon pails of thinner to stand on when I paint roofs.. Regardless of what you do, you just need to get yourself off the ground.. buckets are my thing since you can just scoot them out of the way when you are finished with the roof pass.. If you had anything of good size or structure if you will, you would be hard pressed to paint around it once the roof pass was over.. Just some food for thought

Nice to see another tri-5, I hope you have some pictures to share with us. I haven't been here too long, but I can tell you that you are at the right place for paint products and information. It sounds like you have plenty of time to paint your car, so I'll tell you my plan. It is to build a platform on each of the car---mine will be two milk crates high with plywood on top----and paint the roof separately. I think the only place on your car not separated from the bottom paint line is on the inside A pillar, unless your's is a 150 model. But I'm sure you will get plenty of good advice here.

go to home depot and buy 2 2ft step ladders and a 10 ft 2x10 . i use these for everything. i'm 6'6 but they come in handy for sheetrock or working a roof.
i cheat now as i do everything on a rotisserie .

Shine 6'6.. I would have never guessed it. Must be the angle of your photos you take..

and my empty 5 gallon thinner pails..

we wont get into how many times i've fell off thinner cans or what it cost but do yourself a favor and get some step ladders and a walk board.

Shop the pawnshops and craigslist for a drywall bench> Most of them adjust from 18" high to 30" high. They are usually 4' long. Fold up for storage.

Sounds like a good idea fella's.. I will change the set up for future overalls!!

I just use a plastic step stool. Easy to move around and no chance of the klutz who does the painting banging a metal bench into the car.

Everyone has their own way. I have found that when painting a long roof, I like to have something to walk along that is quite a bit longer than needed. I have stepped off the edge before...

Shine when I put the SPI on my roof, I did use 2 home depot buckets with a 2x8, still a little short and a lil shakey. I may get some small ladders.

you may need a taller ladder. the 2ft works for me but you may need to find a 3ft. i think they make a 3ft . you can also make your own stands but ladders work best and are easy to store.

pull the core out of the valve stems and lower the car if you're painting the roof first.

I did that trick on my Ranger, when I aired the tires back up one of the beads had came loose and I had to jack the thing up before it would regain its shape to seat and seal... ROFLOL
