Has anyone tried this new activator? Just curious what your thoughts are on flash times and how it differs from the slow act. I do lot work so the panels can easily reach 90+ in the shade.

Thanks,

Kent

Fine, I will post my own findings. Used it today. Worked great.

Thank you.

Air temp: 85
Humidity:55%
Panel temp: 92-97
Fluid tip: 1.0 on minigun (equivalent to 1.3 on larger gun)
Pressure: 30psi at gun

After letting base sit for about an hour in the sun I sprayed one wet coat. That flashed off in about 5 min to it was tacky but not stringy. Slapped on next coat and walked away. It was dry to touch in 10-15 min. I didn't cut it because it layed out so nicely. Gloss was fantastic.

I was afraid it would be really slow but for what I do it was perfect. I had been getting a dry line with the slow at these temps and higher but the extra slow didn't have that. Very pleased.

i'll sure be needing it in a couple of weeks. we'll hit 100+ and stay there until sept. but then for me the slower the better. i use slow in the winter.

just did a corvair in black with it on thursday. its the greatest thing spi has come out with in awhile. completely changes the uv clear. stays wet nice and long so it lays and flows out like glass.

That sounds nice, I wonder if there is a use for it here in Idaho. I do occasionally get spray temps in the mid nineties here, though they don't last for long!

i was using it on an overall at about 85deg. its really not needed unless on an overall or something thats going to take awhile to spray. for overalls in almost any mid level temp and up, i think its the only way to go.

Idaho, welcome to the USA!

You may not need it unless you are doing a big job and then you may want to blend with 4001 or 4003 and use kind of like you would a retarder.

I am new to this site and selling SPI.
I had a chance to help shoot a truck with it the other day.
Our weather is 85 degrees, 70% humidity most of the time.

The painter has stated, the clear was hard to keep wet as it dried quickly.

As this is my first job with the universal, I need to find a way to slow the drying time even further.

I spoke to Andy at spi and he said they could make some a little hotter.

i have had a few customers say the same thing but then the extra slow came out. i think that gives quite a bit of time. most spi clears are on the fast side for doing allovers of course it depends on environment and booth. i do think that in a high flow booth the extra slow for an allover might still be on the fast side in really hot weather. i recently sprayed some sikkens clear and that stuff with their fast activator and fast reducer was about the same as the universal with slow or extra slow activator. with all that said though, the more coats you put on the slower it is. by the time you do your third coat with the universal and extraslow i would think you could easily make it around a car with no problem.

I just used the extra slow on an overall yesterday on a 2002 Accord. I think I'm in love. No sand, no buff just paint em rough. This stuff is the bomb! I had one flow indicator and I still don't know how I hung it, passenger a pillar where it meets the fender. You do have to know it's there to see it though.
Thanks Barry.

i've noticed that too jim. not a real big deal because most everything i do gets buffed from head to toe. One major difference is using the extra slow with sikkens clear still prints pretty good the very next day (90 degree temp avg) whereas with the spi extra slow or slow it doesn't print anything like the sikkens. I'd say that is by design seeing is how barry made this stuff for guys who dont have a heated booth for baking and what not?

I've painted panels with universal with normal activator one morning and delivered that afternoon and felt pretty comfortable about it. It was as dry or more than if i used fast hardener and reducer with any sikkens clear. With the sikkens i'd usualy wait till the next morning just to be safe. (all without baking) If i bake the sikkens clear with fast activators and reducers i can get it out in the same time as the universal with normal activator.

Glad it looked good 34!!

Here is where we are, now at on the 3 clears that are my biggest concern in heat of summer.

4000- looks like now should be good for about 112/ 50hum for an all over as made a 10% tweak in the very slow activator and jell time on the clear itself.
the fast activator as of yesterday should be good in 30-40 degree range without waiting more then overnight.

4100 at 102 did OK on F150 allover 80%hum, painter said OK but just a hiar touchy at that temp.
Looks like now should be good for 120 or so as changed the slow activator a couple weeks ago.

5100 (euro 2.1) I have worked hard on this one as our jobber in San Fran sells a boatload but it is 60-75 there and inland where they go and my jobber in LA where a 100 is a cool day, its got to work in all.
I think I got it. Came out with a fast activator and should be good in 50-50 and the slow should be fine in the 110.

This is why feedback is so important to us, we do listen and we discuss every complaint, if given to me, Andy or James.
This is why I Love the tech line also, 50-100+ calls a day, I have my nose in all kind of jobs out there and that helps us to tweak the product.
I would have it no other way.

Your bitching, makes us better! ( I mean that in a good way)

I love it, when the temp is above 85 degrees. I tried it at 70 last night, I was feeling a little coky, arrogant and my kid wanted his car so he could drive it to see his girlfriend at college. I signed the snot out of that paintjob, looks like the Drapery Doctor visited the car. Cut n rub next week. his impatience and my cockiness resulted in a crappy looking pant job. I'm humbled.
