3M red or gold sandpaper?

I have decided to buy good sandpaper for filler and primer sanding.
I have been told 3M is the best, should I buy the red stickit 2 3/4" rolls that 3M says is good for filler or should I just pay the %15 more for the gold stickit roll that is their top shelf?

Well...depends on your grit selection. I think the 3m red 80 grit file stikit is good. But the 40 grit sucks. Wears real quick. The red 180 seems to be good.

Lately I've been using all sunmight gold paper in place of the 3m. It is price a little cheaper and I think it performs just as good.

Good to know, never used the red 40, just the 120" X 2.75", 180 and 80 6" stick-it for the DA. Have some Norton 240 and 320 6" DA (gold color), not bad never compared cost of that to 3M. Used Mirka in the past, cheaper but not as good as the 3M. Where do you get that sunmight?

My jobber carries it. Carries 3m also and sells more of the sunmight. I've heard good things about the norton gold also. The only reason 3m introduced their red line was because of the other manufacturers stepping up and offering better quality at a lower price than the 3m gold.

I just bought some of that sunmight in 320 grit. It is the green film. I really like the adhesive. But I'm not very impressed with how long it lasts.
For as much time and energy as you waste using dull paper I think I'm going to get some gold 3 m.

Try the gold. That is all I use in 2 3/4 rolls. Metalman, yes that is it.

I have both the red and the gold right now. Tried the cheaper lines and was completely dissatisfied with them. The Gold is clearly superior to anything else I have used to date however for the coarser grits that I tend to use more of the Red gets the job done.

If someone has another brand that can keep pace with 3M Gold please let us in on it.

I love the gold, it's worth every penny.

I'm not sure if I can say that anything 3m makes is worth every penny, but they do make some things that are hard to beat.

I've been using a lot of Indasa board, da paper, and wet-n-dry, and very satisfied, it seems they've upped there quality quite a bit and the price sure is right. Even the colorsanding paper is working well in 1000, 1500, and 2000. I tried the red 3M da paper in 80 and 180 and the rolls went fast, the discs didn't last very well.
