2K Regular build primer flash time

My gun spray cap started to clog when I attempted my 3rd coat of 2K. I waited 10 minutes between coats (Air tem 70F). The 'perfect paint job' write up says wait ten minutes, but the 2K regular build tech sheet says let flash prior to next coat - flash times 3-5 minutes. I waited 10 minutes because of the warnining that rushing messes up paint jobs. Should I simply just spray next coat when first coat looks flashed? Or should I clean my gun out between coats? thx!

The next day you can start spraying the 2K Primer over the epoxy. Once again, it is not necessary to scuff or sand the epoxy before applying primer. The most important thing to remember at this point is spray one wet coat of primer and let it set for 10 minutes before applying the second coat. Follow this procedure between coats of 2K Primer. This step when abused messes up more paint finishes than anything else!

Cleaning the air cap with a small brush and some solvent between coats is good practice if there is excess buildup there. You don't necessarily need to wash the whole gun out in every circumstance, imo. Just disconnect the air and keep your hand off the trigger while you are tidying out the cap and fluid nozzle. Between coats I will have the remaining primer in the measuring cup anyway, in order to calculate usage. If you do that also, even if you do bump the trigger, it will not be much of a mess.

Now if there is going to be a long time between coats, like 30 minutes+, a complete wash of the gun is certainly called for with catalyzed material.

I personally like to wait longer than 3 to 5 minutes, especially during cooler weather. Only time I rush it to 5 minutes or less is during the summer months when it is very hot here in Mississippi. On those days it seems to flash before I am even done spraying. LOL. But I am always afraid of piling it on too heavy then having shrinkage issues later. Most times I will pour any left over primer into a mixing cup between coats and run a dash of reducer through the gun while I am waiting to keep my gun from clogging.

I sprayed 2k High build yesterday, maybe 65 degrees, waited 10+ minutes for a full flash, so I removed the air cap, squirted some reducer through it and wiped off with a rage. Took same rag with reducer on it and wiped off fluid nozzle pulling the trigger a few times to get the orifice clean. Worked fine between first and second coats. When spraying the third, it took 10+ seconds of spraying before I got a full spray pattern, I guess the primer was setting up in the gun by then, so got lucky.

Me personally since I am never in a rush and I use the Dekups. I will pull the gun apart and clean it completely between coats. Now with an aluminum cup I could see how this would be an issue.

I found I have to do this when spraying, primer or the matte black.

on completes when clearing I will dismantle the gun also.

I also finds it forces me to wait on the flash times and not go back in too soon.
