2K primer over Acrylic primer ?

I am "attempting" to repaint a 1987 Jeep Comanche. I have sanded the entire vehicle with 220 grit because the old clear coat was chipping off as well some of the paint in areas that someone had previously done some body work. I did not go to bare metal because most of the paint was in decent shape. I have shot about 2/3 of the vehicle with a 1K Acrylic primer surfacer. After reading many articles I am thinking I should have used a 2K primer. Can I , or would it make any sense , to sand the 1K with 320 grit and respray with 2K ? I am going to a SS urethane topcoat ? I'm afraid to move forward with this project cause I don't want to mess it up. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Well, 1k is sand and epoxy/ 2k is solid ground. Which would you want to build your house on?

Take the 1k off, use epoxy and 2k then epoxy sealer.

This is my first paint job so please excuse my lack of knowledge.

You are saying that I can put epoxy over the old paint? I did not go down to bare metal.

If your wanting the best results, and this isn't a fast process by any means. You'll want to strip it all the way to metal. Then, follow "The Perfect Paint Job" guidelines found in the manual or the homepage.
If you're wanting just to make it better, then I'd still say take off the 1k use some epoxy as a sealer over the whole thing and have fun.

Thank you AAE. I believe your right. I need to strip to bare metal and do it right.

Epoxy will give better results over old paint than anything else, but anything 1K needs to come off, it is just not stable. Stripping to metal is always your best bet, as AAE said.

Need to think about this. I doing all the work outside in East Central Florida. Rain almost every afternoon. That's the part that scares me about going to bare metal. Just not sure I can keep the rust off it between the bare metal to epoxy step.

You can do it in sections. A panel at a time. I've never heard how long to wait before getting the epoxy wet.

I would think that once the epoxy kicks off, it should be waterproof. Well...heading out to start removing 1K primer and probably the old paint as well.

Probably knew question was coming.....What's the easiest way to remove the 1K primer ?

80 grit on a DA and it will not take long at all.

Thank you Barry. Glad I found this forum or I would have spent all this time repainting my truck only to find I did more damage than good. And of course the time and money.
