1971 Firebird Esprit

Wait till u see how beautiful universal cuts & buffs. It's soft keep that in mind.
I started cutting my 91 caddy door clad today. Baked in sun for a week & still cuts very very easy.
I lay it on too, use it to straighten what i missed.
You're gonna be blown away.
I cant wash my other universal clear car or everywhere i go its a convo lol.

1200 grit on paint stir stick, 1500 dry on da, 2000 wet on da, 3000 wet on da, Buff & Shine wool pad with Meguiars M101 followed by M101 on a yellow Buff & Shine Pad. Final polish will be last before delivery. Clear had a lot of die back with the Sherwin Williams paint. It looks good color sanded and buffed but I will be sticking with Sherwin Williams clear when I use their paint. Not sure if this clear does it with every boasecoat or not but it turned out to be more work that I thought it was going to be. Some of it was user error I'm positive and I've had other clears do this on SW base so I'm not blaming the clear. Just saying that I get a discount with them and use it a lot so for me this clear won't work out. I was able to get all the run out and I can't tell where they were so that is a plus.

Short video of the one side color sanded and buffed:

Looks great & video proves you do good body work.
You need the boss man to chime in about base effecting clear die back cause that's new to me.
Good job!

The car looks great but please explain the dyeback. How long did the clear sit in the sun before buffing? Did you let the base sit overnight? Is the mequires compounds causing it?

I just don't get dyeback with Universal if it has time to cure. For me 4 coats should sit a week or so and be in the sun as much as possible.

Your too cheap also. People will use the heck out of you if you give time away for free.

Maybe I'm not using the word dyeback the way it should. What I mean is that I sprayed the base, let it sit for an hour and then cleared. It looked good before I left the booth but after drying a few days it had a lot of severe orange peel. I let the car sit in the sun for 2 days before cutting and buffing. I have to rent a booth and it is by the day. I also work a full time job so it makes it difficult to take off work for a day to spray base and take off another day to spray clear and then take off another day to pick the car up. I had the car ready that Saturday morning and took it over around noon to tape it up and sprayed Sunday. The booth is closed on Monday so I had to go in Tuesday morning to pick it up.

As for being too cheap I know. I'm working on that. From now on anything like this is by the hour. I figure I'm losing $3600 on labor if I charge $40/hr on this one.

I always clear same day i base. I always have peel but that's all on me for not buying good gun.
Did you use slowest activator? I'm slow so that's all i'd ever use. Good stuff, makes it look like i know what i'm doing heh.

We have a SW mixing system and we also spray Chroma base and Deltron depending on who has a color formula for the car we're restoring. Haven't seen any difference with the way the clear dries or shrinks with the different bases. ~BOB

Xtreme- ASK what color temp lights are in Booth.
Let's learn something. It's impossible for o.p. to grow as paint cures. Am i right guys?
Guessing outdoor light showed what you really got.

Blue light is shorter wavelength then yellow, red, look at a rainbow.
Purple uv is shortest, red is longest. Measured in nano meters.

What could be happening is the clear gassing out solvents and then mapping onto the texture of the basecoat, mind you the Universal clear is pretty resistant to that.

Clearing a complete only one hour after basecoat may be asking for die back though, still a lot of solvents in the base.

I've often scratched my head when painters say that the clear 'moves or keeps flowing' overnight, how the hell is that even possible? I always keep my mouth shut bc I have nothing intelligent to comment on that. The solvents leaving the paint surface may slightly change the appearance of the job, but that's a different thing in my mind.

The sherwin williams base has done this with another clear I tried too but when I use theirs it doesn't do it.

When I took the pictures of the car in the booth it was fairly slick. When I went in 2 days later to get it there was a lot of orange peel (like a jeep wrangler). It was with the same light. I could tell there was texture compared to when I left. Actually quite a bit. I did a truck a few years ago and it did the same thing. What happened with it is that I rushed putting the clear on. I sprayed 2 coats of sealer with a 1 hr flash and 1 coat of base, cleared 30 minutes later. Truck looked great when I left it but when I picked it up the next morning it looked a lot worse than a jeep wrangler.

This is the second time I've had it happen with the SW basecoats. I used some of the SW dc5010 yesterday over the same base with a 1 hr flash and it didn't do what the uv clear did. I sprayed my whole car in my garage earlier in the year and the SW clear didn't die back. I've used quite a bit of their clear and base for the last year and a half and I only have issues when I use another brand clear.

Interesting the clear does that with the SW base. This problem is a self induced time thing and I get your short schedule but your asking for a solvent pop redo letting the base dry for only an hour. Humidity and temp would play a part in how dry the base would be in a hour. Any paint problems I used to occasionally get have dissapeared by extending dry times to the tech manual.

I haven't sprayed SW clear for over 15 years but I'd sure cringe if I had to drop the Universal.

Yeah this clear just isn't for me. I sprayed some more (going right now) and either it has heavy orange peel where I spray or I have a curtain down the whole side. I'm having to re spray a door because my air hose touched it when in the booth a few weeks ago. I've got at least (2) 4' runs down the side. That was after the first coat. I've got about a quart of clear so I'm going to probably spray 5 coats so hopefully that will be enough to shave/sand out and not have to redo it again. I'm leaving it taped up just in case. I was hoping to just have to denib this panel but it is what it is. I tried the clear and I can say I've tried it. Back to the other stuff I've been using.

Clear & body work looks great from here. I miss mine.
Question- find out what color temp lights were? Just for my own knowledge i'm asking.
Did you use slowest activator & what reducer was used for base? Again, just asking for self.

I need to change my avatar. I grow bananas, pic better suited for farmers forum.
