1968 GMC

Just curious what are your plans are for your gas tank filler nozzle with your rear mounted tank?

I am going to stick with the screw on cap and I bought a billet door to incorporate into the floor. It's basically just a flip up door so I can get my hand around the cap. One day I might replace the cap with the fill-through type, but that's pretty low on the priority list. I'll have that done in the next couple weeks and will post some pictures.

I know you weren't asking me, but I went with the "marine" filler neck in the rear driver's side stake pocket. It was actually wasn't as difficult as I expected.

Not my original idea, it came from the truck forum. There's a pretty good how-to write up over there, although I didn't follow it exactly.

I'm excited to finally be in the coatings stage of the bed. It's been two months since these panels showed up at my house. Last weekend I scuffed the underside of the bed, tubs, and blasted the skirts then shot 3 coats of epoxy to everything. Watch out for the spot welds on these parts though, I was scuffing the front cross sill and a burr on a spot weld almost took my thumbnail off.

Next weekend I'll sand the topside of the bed and shoot 1 coat of epoxy then 2 coats Raptor Liner a day later.

I'm starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel on this bed. Saturday we scuffed the bedsides and the topside of the floor and shot 2 coats epoxy.
Yesterday I sprayed 2 coats Raptor Liner to the floor and now I can say the floor is done. I sprayed the first coat a little light like I would epoxy and then went heavier on the second coat. It's hard to get the Raptor Liner sprayed evenly with such a small pattern. After the 2nd coat, the lines were very apparent but as the day went on it all flashed off and you could hardly see the lines. I think with some time in the sun that it'll all look even.

There were a lot of DA marks and grinder marks in the EDP so I sanded it all with 180 and even 80 and went down to bare metal to get rid of the grinder marks in a few spots.

My very first vehicle in 1981! Bought it from the neighbor who used it for the small country store he owned. By 81 it has cancer spots all over the box. Built a wooden one and new OEM rockers and she was my race truck! Same color and everything.

Wow, looks fantastic! One step closer on the bed. How much Raptor Liner did it take to do the bed floor. I bought a 4 liter kit and was hoping it was enough coat the inside of the bed with 2 coats..? Your gas filler set turned out great.

I used about 2/3 of 2 bottles. I didn't take the chance on using up the last 1/3 on the first bottle just because I wasn't sure if the pot life was long enough and I would have ended up mixing a second bottle anyway. I would think the 4 bottle kit would be enough if you have a shortbed, but a longbed might take a little more.

Bed floor is done. The Raptor Liner cured out nice and hard and very even. Installed the fuel filler door too.

Tailgate, front panel, tubs, tailgate handle, bedside braces, and inner door panels are painted. I'm getting better at spraying clear every time. I think I went too heavy on the first coat on the tailgate and got a long, but small sag on it but the front panel came out flawless. I thought about doing the recessed background around the GMC letters in black, but thought it was too big of an area and wouldn't really fit the theme of the rest of the truck. That, and I didn't have the patience or courage to do the detailed stencil and masking like sprint did with his letters. He really set the bar high!

I sanded the epoxy with 600 wet and scuffed the EDP with red scotchbrite:

Then sprayed one coat 1:1:1 epoxy sealer:

Looks real nice MD, I think the tailgate turned out great all blue.

I cant take too much credit for my letters, I received a lot of guidance from the guys on here.

This thing is really coming down the home stretch. We had such a fun day yesterday putting the bed together, installing the lighting, and the bumper. Also got a few small interior parts done. This has been a lot of fun, but I'm looking forward to having it done so I can drive it and also work on a couple home projects before starting on the next vehicle.

At this point, it needs a hood, Vintage Air, alignment, and a few small items and it'll be done.

Spent almost a full day just stripping the hood. I've been dreading this task but it didn't go too bad. The underside was all original paint and the topside was mostly rust with a little bit of factory primer. I used my Eastwood SCT with the stripping drum (black) and took off the paint on the flat spots. Then spent a few hours with a siphon blaster getting all the contours and edges. Then used the 120 grit drum (red) that came with the tool on the topside, then ran over everything with 80 on the DA and shot two coats epoxy. Of course, the hood oil cans all over the place but I will put the pads between the braces and the skin to take care of that. Only a few minor dents so not a big deal.

The interior is also as complete as it will be until I get my Vintage Air system.
