1963 Dodge Dart for the Wife....

Only for the wife would I struggle through a metallic color but I can see the light... A day of successes and I am feeling good about it....

Decided to use the rotational aspects of my setup to make the trunk and hood painting easier.... Sanded, more base to fix some weird spots and then 3 coats of UC over it. No metallic striping, no runs and no orange peel.... clearly did something wrong. Bake in the sun for a while then wet sand and the final 3 coats. The LH side is ready for the _final_ 3 coats of clear in the morning and the RH side is about 60% wet sanded and will get its final 3 coats on Sunday morning! It is looking amazing...

Ok 85F today, summer is around the corner..... This is a _hot_ color!

That's a nice booth with heat and natural light.

Yikes! And I was complaining about high seventies while trying to paint my house and garage.

Doesn't that high metal temperature affect the buffing compound? I would think that it would.

I need to study my Entomology.... now that it is warmer the bugs swarm in the early morning and go away in the late morning... I shot the LH side and on my 3 coat a swarm of little gnats came..... let it dry and sanded them out.... while each coat was drying I wet sanded the hood and trunk (they had 3 coats of clear yesterday morning) so they can sit in the UV the rest of the day. They are not done all that orange peel has to go or you will see it because of the metallic but I'll wait for the cool of the morning. Finished up the RH side sanding and decided that the bugs were less than the morning so I shot 4 nice coats on that side... ready for the final sanding and buffing just like the LH side! Once the hood and trunk get 4 coats tomorrow she is DONE....

The bean counter @Barry may know is stuff.... Once I shot the LH side with the 4 coats over the wet sanded 4 coats and compared it to the hood/trunk that had 4 coats over the base you could see how much more rich the <gasp> 8 coats had over the 4..... I did not do this with the Coronet or Duster... I did 4 and called it done.....

I just looked at page 1 pics. I'll never understand why anyone would want white.
Totally different car. Look at the body lines you brought out that were hidden!
Looks great, tell wife look for roll of gift wrapping paper, backside's usually white, cutout stripes she's visioning, lay them on car, take pic.

Looks great... next time just pull the other cars out for a day or 2, build a box with a fan and just shoot the car in the garage.

Please don’t swell her head more. She stuffs the “I told him Orange for the Coronet” and now “I chose the dark Turquoise” down in my face daily but really I planted the seed since my late dad had a Belvedere that color and I wanted it that color when I showed it to her. It does give the Dart a totally new look that is for sure!

So you shot 4 coats of clear - sanded and shot 4 more ? What did you sand with after the first 4 ? What grit ? And what grit after the second 4 coats ? I worry about too much clear/wave- I would love to bury my wife’s 68 mustang under 8 coats of clear and see how much of a difference it makes - is there really that much of a difference between 4 coats vs 8 coats ? I’ve never painted more than 4 coats

500 grit. My first try as well. Sanded it with blocks so it should be flat for the next 4..... Yes the hood was 4 coats over the base when I did this so I could do a direct compare... makes it look really deep and made the color even more intense.

So 500 after the first 4 coats - then you shot 4 more coats - what fit did you start out with on the second 4 ? The reason I ask is - if you have to sand the wave out with 500 after the first 4 - don’t you get wave in the second 4 coats ? Just trying to learn so I can put the ultimate clear coat finish on a car

First 2 4 coats, last 2 after sand and 4 more coats...

Probably, you have to sand it out again everyone seems to go 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 and buff....
