A little History

I own a 1931 Packard Std 8 833 Coupe 468. It has been in the family since 1958. My Great Uncle owned it before my father purchased it from him in 1988. Dad did some work on old Bessie (that is the name my friend gave her) when he own it until he passed away in 1996 and left it in my hands. Well fast forward to roughly 2005 I had some engine problems and you know what happens once you start tearing things apart one thing lead to another now I am at a full down to the frame restoration.

This is what the car looked like when I first inherited it and its first local cruise show. Won a trophy at this show :) even thou it was in poor condition.

I have to give a big thank-you to you all here and to BarryK for taking my phone call and helping me get my gun setup. If it wasn't for this site and others I am not sure how I would have gotten through it.
Car looks fantastic. When you going to let the dog drive it?
Every time I am out in the garage either working on the daily drivers or Old Bessie he has to be up in there. It is funny the dog has a $$$$$ bed to lay down in :D

Here are some photos of the roof material that my younger brother and I install late last summer

From My other blog
"With the help of my younger bother last week. We got the windshield installed.

We also install the fabric/vinyl roof material. It was not as hard to install as one would thought. I think the installation went a little easier is because I took out the chicken wire for support of the material and replaced it with a 1/8" thick piece of birch plywood. I glued and screwed the wood to the bows and on the edges I used some top of the line block urethane caulk.

Before installing the material I had this bright idea why not take some extra steps and figure out how can I seal up the seams and all the extra holes in the roof gutter from the previous roof material. While walking around the home store I glanced over to the gutter isle and a bell went off in my head ahh here we go a 4" x 10' roll of gutter/chimney repair/seal stuff. It worked like a charm. I wish I would of taken pictures of all my steps for you to all see but I did not. Was just so up on getting the material installed it slipped my mind."

The installation was done after I had painted the car. We made sure to tape off the work area so not to damage the paint.

Looks great. Have you thought about ditching the tire covers and adding tire mirrors? That would jazz up that Packard even more.

Hey Brad,

Thanks

I do have mirrors but I think they would sit on top of the covers?

But now you have me wondering what way is the correct way to mount them. Will need to do some looking around.

My 31' buick has a chain clasp wrapping around the tire and the top tire holder also pinches it against the tire. Similar to Packards of that area I think. If I could figure out how to post a picture then I'd show you mine. Most guys now don't cover the tires up with canvas covers. Seems like it was the thing to do in the 60's/70's but is kinda out right now.

Some progress this summer.

Had new running boards made then had them powder coated and I have releasable them and installed on car.

Reassemble luggage rack and installed on car.

Painted rear valance with some SPI SS Black (but will need more someday for the fenders but wait awe rats we all know  where that stands :)), wet-sanded, buffed and installed.

Coming along nicely! That color works well and the rack looks very cool!

Bob,

Thanks

Hoping to spend some time on the rear fenders next week and get them ready for paint.

Great job! I know someone with a large Packard collection. It's always fun to see them in person.

Thanks guys. With out all of your valuable inputs and SPI products I would have been lost.
