    What are they thinking ?

This was just copied off a list of others and most were cheaper, but isn't this going too far. I know things are stupid expensive now but $112.00 for a gallon of Rage Gold !! Are they using actual gold in the formula now? And I could even make monthly payments on it. Flows smoothly, sands...

    Dent in stainless steel

My brother-in-law just got a stainless steel table. It is new but has a dent in the top shelf. The shelf is flat and smooth so the dent really shows. Any way to fix this without marring the finish? (The pictures look weird but you can see the distortion.)

    How to post pictures?

I have searched the forum to try to find out how to post pictures in a thread but have not had any luck. Not very computer savvy so need it as simple as possible. The only pictures I have are in the 'picture files' on this old computer and we are still using Google Chrome if that matters. I...

    Epoxy in the sun....150 degrees

2 coats black epoxy (1-1) yesterday.. last coat about 6:30 pm. Out in the good sun this morning at 9:30 am (front of shop is in shade until 9:15). At about 2 hours my IR thermometer reads a high of 151 degrees on top surfaces. Is this too hot? I know the recommend to keep epoxy temps no higher...

Clear coming off...and lots of wax

Got a guy with an early 90's Chevy truck (extended cab) with the typical base/clear failure...hood, roof, tops of doors and fenders. (I assume base/clear. Have not seen it.) He says the clear started coming off a couple years ago so he started waxing it every 2 months, hoping it would slow it...

    Last applied product

What are you guys using as your last applied product at the end of a job that has been wet sanded and buffed? When I worked at a collision body shop we used either 3M Imperial hand glaze or Mequiars #7 polish. A restoration shop I was with for a while used all Wizards products (not impressed but...

Disconnect battery for stud gun use?

Have not worked on a new car in a long time. We used to disconnect the battery when welding on a body or frame repair to protect the electrical stuff but these new cars are much more heavily burdened with all sorts of high tech gizmos and ying yang. Got a 2018 Chevy Equinox in the shop needing a...

    Would you use it?

Just came across about a half gallon of each - gray epoxy and epoxy activator. The primer is dated 07 o1 10 and the activator is dated 9 27 10 so they are over seven years old. They have always been inside a temperature controlled area. Are they safe to use on customers cars? I am very...

    Epoxy adhesion?

I don't know if this is a problem or not. I have a fender in black SPI epoxy primer that was primed in August when it was around 84 degrees. It sat in the sun for 2 days and has had no bodywork done to it. I wanted to check the epoxy adhesion so I sanded a spot with 80 grit (on a block) down to...

Cleaning epoxy as a final finish

What is the best way to clean black epoxy, used as a final finish on inner fenders, firewall, cowl, etc. so that it doesn't get the fine scratches from the wash rag or dry towel. These areas have gotten dusty over time while assembling the car and it is now time to final clean the car for...

    Paint booth walls

Updating the homemade paint booth. I have the wall frames built with enclosed lights but not sure what to use for the walls. Would like to use plywood or sheetrock/drywall but those don't like to get wet. It's not like the walls will get wet everyday but just when I wash the booth down before...

    Tighten the screws

On the old cars it seems that a lot of the small screw holes are always stripped or too large for the fastener to tighten in to. Cowl vent/panel, wheel opening mouldings, body trim, weatherstrip, etc. Going to the next larger fastener is not always an option as many times the screws are specific...

    '55 Chevy trunk lid

All went well with the lid (media blast, epoxy, bodywork, multiple blockings, more epoxy) and it is ready for the final prime. Have it in the sun a couple days to cure and notice a faint ripple, about 5 inches long, in the approximate center of the top surface while it is outside. Pull it inside...

    Taping on fresh epoxy

2 coats of unreduced black epoxy, shot through a 1.5 tip (DeVilbissFLG 3), North Carolina heat and humidity- 90 degrees / 75%..... How soon can I apply masking tape and paper without leaving tape tracks. I can't get a heat lamp on it but I can get halogen lamps in there (engine compartment) if...

    Flattened clear over metallics

If I spray a flattened clear over a metallic color, does that kill the metallic 'effect' when it is in the sun. Or in other words, will a flattened clear also dull down the metallics sparkle. Thanks

    Body filler question

A customer gave me a gallon of 3M Platinum body filler that is about 2 1/2 to 3 years old and was only opened once during that time. I am sure it was stored in his unheated shop during this time. The tech sheet says original, unopened container stored at 65-80 degrees is good for 16 months. I...

Bumper beading water after being sanded

I have not painted an aftermarket bumper in a long time and within 5 minutes of starting to sand this one I am having a problem. It is a YCC brand (Taiwan, of course) that the customer supplied. There is a sticker on the inside that states that adhesion promoter and solvent based primer has been...

    Paint stripper and lead/body solder

I am using Kleen Strip Aircraft paint stripper to remove the factory laquer primer on the quarter panels of a '55 Chevy. (Definitely NOT my preferred method.) I now realize that I have gotten some of the stripper on the leaded joints where the quarter panel meets the panel under the rear window...
