Oops polished through an edge on the door of my GTO. Advice would be appreciated

If you don't recall Don, here's how those pads did on my El Camino that was painted in SPI single stage white: http://www.spiuserforum.com/index.php?threads/heavy-cut-compounds.7945/ I didn't need the wool bonnet step on that car al all.

Yes. Heat is one thing you do have to be careful of with them. I work areas up to 2 sqft at a time starting slow and adjusting up to about 1000 rpm. I reduce the speed on smaller areas. On that bumper I was at 600. I work it until the the compound is fairly dry but not totally and I scrape...

More on denim pads. I used one on the Endura bumper where I had color sanded the all the way across the top, sides where it meets the fenders and the center part. Here's what it looks like using the denim pad and Menzerna 400. 1500 sand scratches to this after just 2 applications. And...

https://www.carpro-us.com/polish-pads/carpro-denim-orange-peel-removal-pad-5-1-2/ 2 packs: https://www.autogeek.net/orange-peel-removal-pads.html They are designed for removing orange peel without having to color sand. I found them to work very well on some factory clear coats and not well at...

Oops polished through an edge on the door of my GTO. Advice would be appreciated

I have developed my own process. I only color sand out to 1500 grit. Then I use a rotary polisher with a denim pad with Menzerna Heavy Cut 400. The denim pad helps remove a little bit of wave or peel that I may have missed. Then I switch to a wool bonnet on the rotary with the Menzerna 400 to...

I remember when that happened to you Shine and it was hard for you to even talk about it. When you said delam, I didn't quite picture it that bad! Good to see you are still going strong. It's been awhile since we've crossed paths. Your paint booth is very, very similar to mine. Works very...

OMG! That must have been tough to take. Glad it didn't get an eye or a tooth in the process.

I'm using a rotary buffer with a wool bonnet. I think you are right in that it did wrap around on me in that area. It wasn't that I had the buffer rotating in the direction it would grab the edge but still in a sideways direction that did let it wrap around a bit. By sideways I mean not in a...

What did the buffer do when hitting the tape that drove you crazy? And what kind of buffing wheel do you use?

I may have some of that tape. I better do that from now on. Good thought on the door edge molding but I don't think I'd like the look of having them on there.

Having to do both doors doesn't seem that much worse than having to do just one but I'd hate to have to do the quarters again even though mine is a convertible. I've finished both quarters and the rear window to deck lid panel and all is good is good with those luckily. I still have the hood...

Oops polished through an edge on the door of my GTO. Advice would be appreciated

Yeah, I guess I do. But I thought I'd ask since I knew you guys would give me the hard truth if that was the only way to get it looking the way it should. What I didn't say is I did it to the other door too in pretty much the same spot. Doggone it. I need to be more careful. Thanks and...

Here's a photo of it: This is SPI dark red with 4 coats of universal clear. The primer you see in the buff through is red epoxy. I sprayed this car all the way back in December of 2021 and am just completing the sanding and buffing of it all now. So this is fully cured clear I would...

1970 Mustang Mach 1 SPI Dark red someday

Beautiful! I love to see gaps and panels all blocked in like that. How will you insure that all the gaps and panel-to-panel alignments will stay just like it is once the car is assembled and sitting on it's wheels?

    Spotting in repairs

Absolutely. That was my intention as the first thing to do. Prime the area and re-block. I thought I should even do it a second time. But my question was about after that. I wasn't sure if it would be better to base the entire fender or just over the primered area. Sounds like you are...

    Spotting in repairs

This looked like a good place to post a question I have. I need to repair a paint screw up on my '69 GTO convertible project. I noticed a low spot I missed on left front fender after I cleared it. I just plain missed it when I was blocking out the primer. I could see it after clearing but...

    Best Clear for Steel Rims?

Thanks guys. Off topic but here's another testament for SPI epoxy. I just installed the grille, and front lights and completed that yesterday. The grilles and headlight bezels are original parts and sprayed with black epoxy. Since the grilles also have some Argent Silver base coat (same as...

    Best Clear for Steel Rims?

Thanks everyone!!! I am quite proud of them. A lot of hours but worth it to me. Followers of my build thread over on the PY forum raved about how these wheels came out more than anything else I've posted. Yes Barry, anything repro are notorious for bad quality paint. 3 of my wheels (15X7)...

    Best Clear for Steel Rims?

I thought y'all might like to see how my wheels came out and how I got there. For my '69 GTO convertible project, I decided to go with stock style Rallye II steel wheels but instead of the stock 14"X6", go with 15"X7" in the front and spare and 15"X8" in the rear. I acquired 3 used later...
