Order of Painting

Has anyone ever gotten a car all blocked and straight then decided to shoot the base and clear... THEN take it apart and paint the backside of the panels, jambs, etc then reassemble? Figured since I would cut and buff it anyway overspray on the money said of the panels is a don't care... This would save a lot of masking to keep the backsides free of overspray... The only downside I can see is the extra risk of chipping something on disassembly....

You would still have to mask because there’d be overspray going into your jambs. Not only would it look bad, it would make for poor adhesion too.

I've only painted a couple of cars assembled. I was kind of trained to panel paint and it just seems to be the way I do things. I always tell myself "Ya im gonna cut this in and assemble it" and then bammm.. before I know it im hanging parts and painting it all in pieces.

So what’s your guys opinion on spreading out the time painting in pieces. If I do that I’ll probably end up having to Plan it such that it’ll take me a couple weeks to get it all painted do you think I’m risking not having it matching because the differing weather conditions when I paint.

You paint outside right? Not sure how much different the weather can possibly be for you. I wouldn't worry about it much. How much base did you order? Anymore than 1 gallon I would mix it all together and then repackage it into the gallon cans.

I am not saying there wont be any issues with a fine bright mettalic color. It can definitely be an issue.

Yes I have 2 gallons of Motobase from Chad. He said I should get 6-7 coats on it (yellow) to make sure it is fully covered and it is a solid pastel color

Pretty low risk for a solid color imho. Key is making sure you have good coverage. I would get some spray out cards and see how many coats are needed. Minimum three would be my guess.

Carefully record your gun settings.

6 to 7 coats. Wow….

Ya thats crazy. I would think over a good white sealer you should still be in the 3 coat range. but I dont know exactly what he spraying so Im not just going to do the "FACEBOOK" way and claim my way is the only way! lol

I was a bit surprised as well since my experience with Motobase from him has been it covers like ink. I do know I tried to do the Coronet apart and 3 coats of SPI orange was not enough and I could see a difference in the hood and trunk.

Absolute worst color I ever panel painted... "Inka gold".. in shopline base(puke) took 7 coats to get full coverage over gray. I had issues and had to respray some pieces after the car was assembled. It was not my choice to panel paint it and it was definitely not my choice to use SHOPLINE base.

At my old house.

Well if you do go that route, I'd suggest basing one day and letting it set up over night and clearing the next day. I generally do that with everything, but that much base I would give it as long as possbile to gas out before clearing.

Totally learned that lesson with Motobase on the Duster and Dart... The base will craze bad if you don't... Duster was a fail and I let it sit longer on the Dart but still had a couple little issues... this time it will sit overnight.

That color looks like it could be a bugger.

Also I shot the Dart dash in Nason SS... that stuff was crap like your experience I think it took 5 coats to barely cover AND it was tacky the next day... it took days for it to dry so you could touch it and not leave a finger print. The SS Motocryl that Chad sent me for the Valiant dash laid down so nice, covered in 2 coats and was dry to the touch in a few hours.

Yea I need to pick up some cards... good point on the settings.

Definitely not trying to suede you to do something you're not comfortable with. Also I'll add when I do paint. I try to always do as many adjacent panels as I can. I panel paint to avoid any tape lines and I think it saves time(it probably doesnt)
